The Winterset Madisonian
Winterset, Madison Co. Iowa

February 2, 1871

Last Friday was certainly a lovely day. The sun came out warm, and the air was mild. The only disagreeable feature was the sloppiness of the roads, the frost having been, to quite an extent, thawed out. Taken as a whole so far, no man has seen a finer winter in this latitude.

The children of the Presbyterian Sunday School contributed sufficient money last Sunday to buy a Bible for the jail.

Married on January 31st were John COAKLEY and Priscilla MOORE, with J. F. YERGER, M. G. officiating.

Col. LOTHROP was in town last Monday. He has been at Des Moines so long that he has got to be a Capital looking fellow.

Last Saturday evening, Mr. and Mrs. J. J. HUTCHINGS celebrated their crystal wedding. A large circle of friends repaired to their house, by invitation, many bringing presents of glassware. A very pleasant evening was spent. The presents which covered a good sized extension table, were presented to the happy couple by V. WAINWRIGHT, Esq., in a suitable manner, and they were received with proper response.

Winterset has been unusually lively this winter. Large and fashionable parties have rapidly followed each other ever since winter set in. The latest was at W. H. H. DABNEY’S last Thursday evening. Who’s turn next?

At Bedford, Indiana, by the Rev. Mr. STORKER, on the 19th ult. Mr. George DUFF of this county and Miss Sarah J. HUDSON of the former place were married.

A son of Wesley and Mary M. ROBERTS, Walter M., died on February 20th and was buried at the St. Charles Cemetery.

Married on February 22nd were William RAKESTRAW and Jeannete E. LAIRD, with William CAMPBELL, M. G. officiating the services.

Eli COX and wife started this week for Dayton and Zenia, Ohio on a visit to their friends. They will be absent about six weeks.

Two marriages occurred on February 16th, Oliver C. JAMES and Sarah J. ORMAN were united and Eli WILSON and Elizabeth WILLIAMS.

The collage enterprise of Earlham is prospering finely. A meeting of the Board of Managers was held on Wednesday evening last, and the sum of thirty-one hundred dollars was subscribed toward the enterprise. It is supposed that work on the buildings will be commenced sometime during the coming spring. We hope to see this praiseworthy enterprise brought ot an early completion and the day hasten when it will rank with its
namesake, Earlham college of Indiana. The following persons compose the Board of Managers: Milton WILSON; Enoch PRITCHARD; W. T. FORD; David STANTON and Alfred MCKINNEY.

A week or two ago the Presbyterian church procured a new silver Communion set. This week Mrs. ALRICH, widow of the late Reverend ALRICH, sent the church a new and beautiful silver service, not knowing that they had already secured one.
