The Winterset Madisonian
Winterset, Madison Co. Iowa
February 2, 1871
Last Friday was certainly a lovely day. The sun came out warm,
and the air was mild. The only disagreeable feature was the
sloppiness of the roads, the frost having been, to quite an
extent, thawed out. Taken as a whole so far, no man has seen a
finer winter in this latitude.
The children of the Presbyterian Sunday School contributed
sufficient money last Sunday to buy a Bible for the jail.
Married on January 31st were John COAKLEY and Priscilla MOORE,
with J. F. YERGER, M. G. officiating.
Col. LOTHROP was in town last Monday. He has been at Des Moines
so long that he has got to be a Capital looking fellow.
Last Saturday evening, Mr. and Mrs. J. J. HUTCHINGS celebrated
their crystal wedding. A large circle of friends repaired to
their house, by invitation, many bringing presents of glassware.
A very pleasant evening was spent. The presents which covered a
good sized extension table, were presented to the happy couple by
V. WAINWRIGHT, Esq., in a suitable manner, and they were received
with proper response.

The collage enterprise of Earlham is prospering finely. A meeting
of the Board of Managers was held on Wednesday evening last, and
the sum of thirty-one hundred dollars was subscribed toward the
enterprise. It is supposed that work on the buildings will be
commenced sometime during the coming spring. We hope to see this
praiseworthy enterprise brought ot an early completion and the
day hasten when it will rank with its
namesake, Earlham college of Indiana. The following persons
compose the Board of Managers: Milton WILSON; Enoch PRITCHARD; W.
T. FORD; David STANTON and Alfred MCKINNEY.
A week or two ago the Presbyterian church procured a new silver
Communion set. This week Mrs. ALRICH, widow of the late Reverend
ALRICH, sent the church a new and beautiful silver service, not
knowing that they had already secured one.
