There will be hordes of grasshoppers in some 80 counties in Iowa
within a few weeks unless unfavorable weather and rains during
June and early July destroy them. Neither the low temperatures of
the past wintenr nor the rains so far this spring have materially
changed the grasshopper situation in the state. The cool wet
spring however, has greatly delayed the hatching time, and
perhaps not more than from 1 to 5 percent of the eggs have
hatched. These factors combined with very heavy growth of
vegetation will have not only delayed hatching but will also
cause a very irregular and erratic hatching. Egg pods in areas
containing a very heavy growth of vegetation will develop slowly
and take from a week to ten days longer to develop than those
laid in exposed sandy areas or closely pastured fields.
