Oldest pioneer resident of Lucas County, who died at his home in
Russell Thursday afternoon at the age of 82 years. Practically
his entire life was spent in Lucas County
RICHARD CROSS DIED AT HOME IN LUCAS ON SUNDAY
Richard Cross, father of John T. Cross of this city, died at his
home in Lucas Sunday at the age of 73 years. His death resulted
from a stroke of paralysis suffered about one year ago, and from
which he never recovered.
Mr. Cross was born in Wales and came to America with his parents
when about 8 years of age. The family settled in Pennsylvania and
when 18 years of age Mr. Cross came to Iowa, moving to Lucas in
1890.
Three children survive. The children are Mrs. Welles King of
Woodburn, Selina, who made her home with her father, and John T.
of Chariton.
Funeral Services, conducted by the Rev. E. L. Stone of Chariton
were held from the M. E. church in Lucas this afternoon at 1:30
oclock. Members of the Masonic loge had charge of the
services at the grave in the Chariton cemetery.
JOE SHELTON ATTENDS STAFF MEETING OF INSURANCE MEN
Joe Shelton, Metropolitan Life Insurance Company agent here, was
in Albia Monday morning to attend a meeting of workers for the
company in this district. Others who attended were George Kaliff,
Mystic; Earl Deahl, Centerville; Harry Stewart and Max Nelson,
Oskaloosa; G. D. KeKock, Pella; E. C. Summers, Ottumwa, and Earl
Frank, Richard Samuels and Theo Morris, Albia.
FOUR INDICTMENTS WERE RETURNED BY LUCAS GRAND JURY
Were Dismissed Subject to Recall After Consideration of Criminal
Cases Four men were indicted on five different counts by the
grand jury for the January term of the Lucas County district
court, before they were dismissed subject to recall late last
week. Each of the four men were indicted upon one count with the
exception of Harold Mathany of Creston, who figured in the
automobile accident on the primary No. 34, four miles west of
Chariton recently, in which Golda Sylvara and her niece,
Rosemary, were injured. Matheny was indicted on two counts. They
were operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated and failure to
report an automobile accident T. R. McKee of Kohaka, Mo., who was
in the car with Matheny at the time of the accident,

LOCAL WOMAN GETS HONOR
Mrs. Gifford Tuttle Selected to Decorate Show Window for Model
Hardware
Mrs. Gifford Tuttle, who has gained nation-wide prominence
through the window displays she has designed for the Tuttle
Hardware store here, has been given considerable honor by the
committee in charge of the annual convention of the Iowa Hardware
Dealers association, which will be held in Des Moines February 10
to 13. The local woman has been chosen to decorate the window of
the model store which will be a feature of the hardware
convention. The model store will be complete in every detail and
designed much after the fashion of he Tuttle store here, which is
regarded as one of the most modern hardware stores in the middle
west. Everything from the display windows to the delivery
platform in the rear will be included in the model store display.
The convention of the Iowa hardware dealers is regarded as one of
the very best in the United Stats, (sic) and being chosen to have
a part in arranging the convention is a distinct honor for Mrs.
Tuttle and the local store.
More Than 700 Cups of Coffee Served at The Cooking
School
C. E. Rosecrans of Oskaloosa, district representative for
Folgers Coffee, served hot coffee at each session of the Chariton
Leader and Herald-Patriot free cooking school, and more than 700 cups were
served during the three days. Two hundred and thirty-five ladies
tasted the Folger coffee the first day of the school, 265 the
second day and 252 the last day.
ANNUAL GUN CLUB MEET DREW LARGE CROWD ON FRIDAY

The annual meeting of the Chariton Gun club at the court house
last Friday evening drew a large crowd, and an enthusiastic and
worthwhile meeting was the result. One of the features of the
meeting was an address by Dr. J. Malony of this city, lecturer
with the state fish and game department. Dr. Malonys
address on conservation was one of the best ever delivered before
the club as it dealt only with facts concerning the fishing and
hunting problems in Iowa. The doctor stated that the hunters,
fishermen, dog hunters.

ERLANDSON TO ACCEPT CALL
Lutheran Minister Leaves for Milford, Mass., Church on March
First

Rev. N.J. Erlandson, pastor of the First Lutheran church in
Chariton, will leave about March 1 to accept the pastorate of the
Lutheran church in
Milford, Mass., according to announcement made by the minister
Saturday. He will preach his first sermon at Milford on Easter
Sunday. The local minister tendered his resignation here Sunday,
December 28, after having received a call from the eastern
church, and New Years day the resignation was accepted in
order that Rev. Erlandson might accept the advancement in the
work of the church that had offered him. Rev Erlandson has been
popular with members of his congregation and in other affairs of
the city since coming to Chariton. His successor here has not
been elected.
