Early Settler Deceased
Mr. and Mrs. Martin Anderson left Tuesday morning for Des Moines
to attend the fair and vist a niece, after which the intended to
visit his aged sister, Mrs. Parmelia Baldwin, at Clarkson, Warren
County, whom they supposed was in usual health. Shortly after
their departure on the early train, a telephone message came to
apprise Mr. Anderson of the death of this only sister. No futher
particulars are at hand. In 1848, Mrs. Baldwin and her husband
drove from Indiana to the wild, unsettled prairie that was later
set apart and designated as Lucas County. They located in the
neighborhood known as Ireland, and were the second settlers in
the county, joining the first permanent settler, Wm. McDermitt,
who with his wife and four little folks had located on a claim of
160 acres, in September of the previous year. The historic spot
was named by Mr. McDermitt in honor of his native land, and is in
section 16 of Cedar township. For many years Mrs. Baldwin was an
esteemed resident of that neighborhood, later removing to Warren
county where her death occured last Tuesday.
