Murdered and Money Stolen - Alaska Tragedy

Iowa City, Iowa, Jan 16 - A message was received here yesterday
morning stating that Louis Schonborn, formerly of Marengo, and
wll known throughout Johnson county, had been robbed and murdered
on the night of December 26, at Chissne, Alaska, where he has
been conducting a general merchandise store. The victim was many
miles from a telegraph station or railroad and as yet facts
concerning the death are not known by his friends. Mr. Schonborn
has been in Alaska about two years, but was expecting to return
in April. He has several farms in this county and was said to be
quite wealthy. He is well known throughout the county; an uncle
of Mrs. E. Otto of Marengo and a nephew of C.A. Schonborn.
Chicago, Jan 16 -- Louis Schonborn, a former Chicagoan, who is
reputed to have acquired a fortune in the Alaskan gold field, was
murdered in Alaska January 5, according to a letter received by
police officials who were requested to search for his relatives.
Wedding Announcement.
Mr. and Mrs. P.O. Clark announce the marriage of their daughter
Edith Marjory to Ira Lynn Jones at Seattle, Wash., on Jan 3,
1915. Mrs. Jones is the oldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Clark and
has been in Tacoma, Wash., the last three years, going there to
accept a position in the county attorney's office. Recently she
has been secretary to the president of a large insurance company.
She was graduated from the Marion high school with the class of
1907 and after completing a course in the Cedar Rapids Business
college, held several good positions in Marion and Cedar Rapids
before going west. Mr. Jones is a graduate of Wesleyan university
of South Dakota and of the law department of the University of
Washington. He is engaged in the practice of law at Seattle and
after Feb. 1, he and his bride will be at home at 1117 Pike
street, Seattle.
Obituary of Mrs. Elijah F. Biggs
Mary J. Webster, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. P. Webster, was
born in Morgan county, Ohio, July 13, 1849. When she was 6 years
old her parents came to Iowa and located on Dry Creek near where
the town of Robbins now is. She lived in the vicinity of Marion
during her early life and has resided in Marion for the last two
years. March 9, 1867, she was united in marriage to E.F. Biggs.
To this union three sons were born, one of whom, Alton, died in
infancy. She was a loyal and loving wife and mother. When she was
15 years old she was baptized by Elder N.A. McConnell. She was a
member of the church at Troy Mills, until she transferred her
membership to Marion. After a few years of failing health she
died January 14, 1915, after a life of 65 years, 5 months and 1
day. She leaves her husband, two sons, Calvin W. and Earl F.
Biggs of Marion, Iowa, a daughter, Mrs. May Andrews of Troy
Mills, Iowa, also twelve grand children. Three brothers, A.D.
Webster in Louisiana; J.A. Webster in Oregon; Marion Webster of
Troy Mills, Iowa, and a sister, Mrs. Narcissa Seeley of Cedar
Rapids, Iowa. The funeral was held this afternoon at 2 o'clock
from the Christian church and conducted by her pastor, Rev. L.M.
Starr. Interment was in Oak Shade cemetery.
Obituary of John Walser.
John Walser was born in Pennsylvania, Jan. 1, 1830. He came west
as far as Ohio with his mother when a small boy, his father
having died in Pennsylvania. After he arrived in Ohio, he made
his home with his aunt and uncle until the age of 16, when he was
apprenticed to a tailor, which trade he followed until he came to
Iowa, at the age of 22 years. At this time he decided that
farming offered better opportunity for success. He was married to
Hannah Metcalf, on Nov. 16, 1852. The first year of their
marriage was spent at Independence; from there they removed to
Balck Hawk county, where they remained one year. They then
returned to Linn county, and Marion township, which has ever
since been their home. To this union was born five children, two
sons and three daughters -- the two sons and one daughter, having
preceded their father in death. Two daughters, Mrs. W.A. Robbins
and Mrs. John Stookey with the mother survive. Mr. Walser has
been a sufferer for sixteen yeras, but death came as a relief at
Mercy hospital, Cedar Rapids, Jan. 13, 1915, at the age of 85
years and 13 days. The funeral services were conducted from the
home of Mr. and Mrs. John Stookey Friday afternoon by Dr. C.F.
Ensign, assisted by the Rev. J.B. Jones. Burial at Marion.
Charged with Wife Desertion.
F.C. Leatherbury was arrested yesterday on a warrant issued by
Justice Lightner charging him with wife desertion, the complaint
having been filed by Mrs. Leatherbury. He demanded a hearing,
which will take place at 9 o'clock Tuesday morning.

Obituary.
John M. Newman was born in Indiana, March 22, 1888, and died
January 11, 1915, aged 76 years, 10 months and 19 days. He leaves
to mourn his loss three brothers and two sisters. Two brothers
and three sisters have gone on before. Mr. Newman had walked on
crutches for seventy years. He was a member in good standing of
the Baptist church.
Charles Kos, Popular Young Man, Is Dead
Charles Kos, twenty-seven years old, for several years stage
carpenter at Greene's opera house, died Friday evening at a local
hospital. He had been in poor health for several weeks, but had
been confined to the hospital only about two weeks. He was a son
of Mr. and Mrs. A.J. Kos, 1445 Fourth avenue, and was one of the
popular young men of the city. Mr. Kos is survived by his wife,
his parents, two brothers, Edwin and J.G. Kos, and five sisters,
Mrs. V. Schime, of Charles City, Amelia Kos, of Freeport, Ill.,
Misses Rose and Tillie, of Cedar Rapids, and Miss Emma, of New
York City. Funeral services will be held Monday from the home of
his parents.
Wedding Anniversary.
Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Gorton entertained a number of their friends
at their home, 219 North Second street west, in honor of their
silver wedding anniversary. A three course supper was served. The
guests included Messrs. and Mesdames George Rowray, M.L. Kasner,
John Gorton, Jode Rains, B.A. Bruner, Sam Gorton, Mrs. Pearl Nunn
and Miss Lucille Kasner.
Kenwood Park News
-Miss Ruby Byers and Miss Stella Speake of Cedar Rapids were
entertained by Mr. and Mrs. J.F. McLaughlin Sunday afternoon and
evening.
-Mrs. J.E. Perry was an over Sunday visitor with her mother, Mrs.
E. Howard, and sister, Mrs. J.T. Glenn, returning to her home in
Postville Monday.
-Mrs. Charles Stewart went to Marshal, Minn., Monday for a two
weeks' visit.
-I.T. Glenn spent Thursday and Friday in Des Moines.
-Mrs H.E. Wilcox attended a party in La Porte City Monday,
returning home Tuesday evening.
-Lynn White of Manly spent Wednesday night here with his mother,
Mrs. Mary White.
-Miss Emma Alden of Wyoming, Ia., is a guest at the M.E.
parsonage this week.
-Leslie Mills is home from the hospital where he underwent an
operation.
-Mrs. J.F. Rau entertained Miss Courtney and Miss Bunting at
dinner Thursday night.
-Mrs. Walter Lewis will entertain the N.E.O. club Wednesday
afternoon.
-Mrs. C.B. Zollinger of Vinton came Thursday evening for a
week-end visit with her sister, mrs. Arthur Baxter.
-The young people, namely, Miss White, Vesta Jones, Clifford
Rundall, Bernice Waddington, John Wall, Leota Nickols, Spencer
Morgan, Lillian Dain, Ralph Wilcox, Ruth Easterly, Westley Geist,
enjoyed a bob-ride Tuesday evening. They drove to Marion, took in
the city, then took in a show, returning all reported a fine
time.
J.N. Gardner.

Williamsburg, Iowa, Jan. 16 -- The funeral service of J.N.
Gardner, who died so suddenly Thursday morning, will be conducted
at the residence tomorrow. Mr. Gardner was ill only a few
minutes, having arisen at his usual time in the morning. He felt
a keep pain in the region of the heart, sent for the physician,
and lived only a short time after the arrival of the physician.
He was 64 years of age, and had lived in the west part of town
for several years, moving to that residence when he retired from
the farm. He was highly respected and very highly spoken of by
all who knew him.
Robert Martin Dead

Belle Plaine, Iowa, Jan. 16 -- Robert Martin for many years a
well known resident of this city, died on Thursday, Jan 14, at
the family home on Eleventh street. He was born in Indiana in
1847. He leaves one daughter and three sons to mourn the loss of
a loving father. The funeral services will be held on Sunday,
Jan. 17 at 2:30 p.m. at the M.E. church, interment at Oak Hill.
Death of a Patriarch

Belle Plaine, Iowa, Jan. 16 -- James Blair died on Thursday, Jan
14, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. A.F. Greenlee, on Seventh
avenue. He was born in Fairfield county, Ohio, and was 96 years,
8 months and 13 days old. He was a retired farmer and has been a
resident of Belle Plaine for almost fifty years. He leaves four
daughters and two sons. The funeral services will be held at the
home of his daughter, Mrs. A.F. Greenlee, on Monday, Jan. 18, at
10:30 a.m. Interment at Oak Hill.
