the past four years. Previous to his appointment as foreman he
was captain of the night watch, serving in this capacity for
eighteen months. Mr. Williams came from Anamosa, Iowa, and has

many friends were glad to hear of his good fortune.

Colony Notes by P.P. Man
Guy Helm, 3122, left Thursday in charge of Receiving Officer
Nelson, for the State Hospital, Independence. Helm is an
eighteen-year man, received from Fort Madison by transfer. He was
the tallest man in the Wards.
Officer Bunder returned Monday from Appanoose county looking as
though his two weeks' leave had been pleasantly spent.
Steward Lumadue turned over the recipe for plum-duff to Officer
Leonard yesterday and left for Des Moines to see the State fair.
Mr. Lumadue was in the Regular Army for a number of years and for
a time was stationed at Des Moines. Hence he will not be among
strangers.
Julius Metzner, 4716, the old German employed in the Storeroom,
virtually received the sympathy of the State when Governor
Cummins on learing of the drowning of the two Metzner girls in
the Des Moines river at Humboldt Thursday evening granted the
bereaved father freedom to attend the funeral. Metzner broke down
and cried when told of the Governor's clemency. He left yesterday
morning for Humboldt, accompanied by Assistant Deputy Lowe.
If the stonecutters have noticed an improvement in the cutting
life of their chisels this week, the credit is due to Roe, 5232,
who is an expert temperer of edged tools. He doesn't look very
formidable in a leather apron and with sleeves rolled up, but he
is there with the temper all right.
