Two Die in Plane Crash Near Tiffin
The Johnson county grand jury was investigating Tuesday the fatal
plane crash near Tiffin that resulted in the death of two
passengers and the injury of the pilot, Ronald L. Kendall, of
Waterloo. Gerald Randol, 36, of Ottumwa and John Lee, Jr., 19, of
Hudson, Iowa, both passengers in the plane were killed when the
plane struck a tree and nose-dived into a cornfield, after a
take-off from a cloverfield about one-quarter of a mile west of
Tiffin Monday evening. According to kendall, the pilot, they were
flying from Ottumwa to Waterloo and losing their bearings, came
down at Tiffin to inquire directions. In the take-off the plane
rose about 60 feet but failed to clear the top of a tree, and
crashed in a nearby cornfield, killing one man instantly, and
injuring the other so that he died within a few minutes.
