MAYOR FIGHTS KLAN MEETINGS
Denies Right to Meet Within City Limits; Affair Taken Into Court.
(By Associated Press)
WAYLAND, Ia. [Henry Co], April 20- The right of a mayor to
prevent the gathering of "a peaceable assembly" on
private grounds was to be decided by the courts this afternoon.
E.M. Shellhouse, alleged organizer of the Ku Klux Klan will be
tried before mayor Magdefrau on a charge of conducting a public
meeting on a farm near here after permission to do so had been
denied by the mayor. Last Thursday evening, in defiance of the
mayor's orders, a meeting was assembled on the Marion Reel farm,
within the corporate limits of Wayland. Shellhouse was released
on bond. The meeting then retired just outside the town limits
where Shellhouse continued his address.
