Graves Well-Marked -- French Guard Last Resting Places of Yanks
Paris -- Americans will have no trouble in finding the graves of relatives who fell on the field of battle in France, after they obtain from the graves registry bureau the location of the interment. The French are taking excellent care of the last resting places of Americans. Crosses with name plates have been erected over the burial places of every identified man that has fallen. Usually the steel helmet of the man -- and it generally has his name written on the hatband -- has been placed on the grave, together with his bayonet, thrust into the earth as a sort of foot stone. Often his canteen and cartridge belt have been hung from the cross, and sometimes papers describing his identity and how he fell have been placed in a corked bottle, the neck of which is imbedded in the earth.

There is no danger that French civilians in the regions where the men are buried will appropriate any of these articles as souvenirs. Four long years of war, with the discarded equipment of Germans, British and French scattered over the terrain has purged them of all desire or longing for souvenirs. Civilians returning to their shell-shattered homes have found their front gardens converted into a cemetery of three or four graves. But the graves have not been molested, on the other hand, they are kept up by civilians who keep the edges trimmed and a spray of flowers or leaves on the mound. Even the children respect the burial places, and while they may pick up bayonets or grenades that they find in the fields, they never touch the equipment placed on the graves.

Homer J. Pain is Iowa's New Gold Star
Word comes today from the father of Homer J. Pain of Eagle Grove that the former university student died in France of pneumonia, Sept 26, 1918.The young man began a pre-medic course at the university in the fall of 1917, but left soon after to join the colors. He was inducted into the service at Jefferson Barracks, December 13, 1917, and was sent overseas with the 258th Aero Squadron in the latter part of August of this year. His death came about a month after his arrival in France. While at the university the young soldier was very much interested in the study of military science, and was working to become a cadet officer under former Capt. Mamma. The death of this brave aviator adds a new gold star to the university's service flag. Another son of democracy has cheerfully given his "last full measure of devotion" to his nation. Iowa will long honor his memory.

Thomas Rogers Died Yesterday
Thomas A. Rogers, died yesterday afternoon, at half past four o'clock, of influenza and complications. He was thirty-eight years old, and was the capable chef at the College Inn, and was well known in Iowa City. Surviving him are his widow, Mrs. Anna Rogers and four children, Edith, Viola, Lester and Harley. He also leaves his father, John Rogers, and a sister, Mrs. E.R. Thatcher, both of this city. The funeral will be held tomorrow afternoon at 2 o'clock, from Harmon's chapel. Interment will be in Oakland cemetery. Friends will sympathize with the family in their bereavement.

Mrs. E. Reizenstein Died this Morning
Mrs. Elizabeth Reizenstein died at an early hour this morning at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Annie Hotz, 618 N. Dodge street. She was eighty years old and has been a resident of this city for nearly half a century. She is survived by a son, Charles and a daughter, Mrs. Annie Hotz, and three stepsons, Joseph of Pittsburgh, Kansas, Silas of New York City, Jacob E., of Iowa City. A private funeral will be held tomorrow afternoon at 2 o'clock from the home, with interment in Oakland cemetery. Iowa City friends will grieve to hear of the death of this aged pioneer.

Mr. and Mrs. Roscoe Thomas are Dead
The cold hand of death entered the little family circle of Roscoe Thomas, a splendid young man of North English, this week and took both he and Mrs. Thomas. The cause of the double sorrow was influenza and pneumonia. Mr. Thomas died Tuesday and his wife followed him yesterday. Mr. and Mrs. Thomas were both in their early twenties and very estimable young people. Mr. Thomas held the position of cashier of one of the banks at North English and was well known in the vicinity of Hills, in this county. He was also known to many brother shriners here as he was one of the jolly bunch that took the work here September 25.

Williams - Rohret Wedding
Friends of Iowa City have received the news of the recent marriage of Miss Esther Williams and Edward Rohret in Montana. Both formerly lived in Johnson county, and are members of well known families. The bride is the daughter of the late Evan Williams, a former resident of Johnson county, and about five years ago went with his family to Montana. The groom has also resided there a number of years, and each of the young people now have a rich tract of farming land especially adapted to wheat growing. Friends wish them happiness and success in their Montana home.

Miss Ella Miller, Young Teacher Dies
Miss Ella Miller, former teacher in the Grinnell schools, and a daughter of Mrs. Alexander Miller, of Oxford, after a lingering illness, died at a local hospital. The remains were taken to Oxford for interment, a private funeral being held there on Sunday. Miss Miller's father, Colonel Alexander Miller was well known, and, at one time had been editor of the Oxford Journal. Surviving are the bereaved mother, two brothers, Judge Jesse Miller, and Howard Miller, both of Des Moines, and one sister, the wife of Professor Eugene Henley, of Grinnell. An uncle, the Reverend Dr. Miller, was for many years a minister of the Methodist church, and was for a time located in Iowa City. Miss Miller was a highly esteemed young woman, and as an instructor, had won many friends, whose hearts will be saddened to hear of her untimely death.

Mrs. Dutton of Coin, Iowa Died
Mrs. Beulah Dutton died yesterday at a local hospital. She was twenty-five years old, and was the only child of Mr. and Mrs. J.R. Weaver, of Coin, Iowa. Her husband is a civil engineer in France. The funeral will be held tomorrow at the home of her parents in Coin, Iowa.

Mildred Ihric Dead at Wellman *
Nothing has so shocked the people of Wellman in a long time as the announcement Tuesday telling of the death of Miss Mildred Ihrig, who only a few days prior was seen on our streets, apparently in the best of health. she had been attending the Wellman High School, being a member of the Sophomore class, and only last week was called to the home of her parents, who reside near Frytown, to help care for the family who were ill with Spanish influenza. She soon contracted the disease herself, then pneumonia developed which soon caused her death. Mildred was a beautiful, lovable little lady, and had friends by the store in Wellman, who loved her for her sweet, kindly disposition, and her lady-like manners. She was aged 14 years, the daughter of Mr. and mrs. Homer Ihrig, and all her life had been spent in or near Wellman. The funeral services are being held at the Pleasant Hill cemetery today, conducted by Rev. Worrell. Profound sympathy is extended to the bereaved parents.

[*transcriber note: the surname of the deceased was spelled both Ihric and Ihrig in this obituary; transcribed by S.F., June 2008]
