SECOND FIRE AT DUBUQUE CAUSES LOSS OF ANOTHER HALF MILLION
DOLLARS
Three Men Arrested
Thought to be the Work of Firebugs ---$5,000, Reward Offered for
Convictionof Men Who Are Responsible
By United Press. Dubuque, May 29. - fire again visited the burned
districts of this city last night, which suffered a loss of
nearly a million dollars last Saturday, causing a further loss of
about a half million, making the entire loss of property during
the past three days to be nearly a million and a half dollars. It
is thought that they fire of last night was due to the fiendish
work of incendiaries, and a reward of $5,000 is offered for the
arrest and conviction of the men responsible for the terrible
loss.
Lumber Company Again Loses.
The Standard Lumber Company which suffered so heavily in the fire
of Saturday, was again the big loser last evening, when more than
$300,000 worth of their property went up in blue smoke.
The Collins and Kearns ice house burned to the ground with a loss
of $80,000 and the Starr Brewery also went through the ordeal
with the destruction of $10,000 worth of property.
Feeling High Among Citizens.
Feeling over the fearful losses of the past three days run high
here among the citizens, and it is feared that if the
incendiaries are caught, they will need police protection.
Three Suspects Arrested.
Three men suspected to be implicated in the starting of the fire
of last evening have been arrested by the police, and are being
held for trial.
Given "Sweating" Process.
(by United Press) Dubuque, May 29 -The three men arrested here
this morning for complicity in the fire of Saturday have been put
through a very stringent "sweating" process but as yet
have given nothing which can be used against them. The police are
confident, however, that they know something in regard to the
affair and will keep at it. The detectives and members of the
regular police force are hot on several clues, and believe that
they shall have something very definite inside of a few hours.
PRESIDENT TAFT TO THE HIGH SCHOOL
White House, Washington, D.C., May 26, 1911
Mr. Jas. Rea
Principal Iowa City High School
Iowa City, Iowa
Dear Mr. Rea: I learn that the team representing the Iowa City
high school has just won the inter-high school rifle shooting
team championship of the United States, and I desire to convey my
hearty congratulations to the five young men who have thus
brought honor and credit to themselves and to the school. The
winning of the team championship of the United States is a
noteworthy accomplishment, but the members of the Iowa City team
deserve great credit for the score which they attained which, I
understand, breaks all interscholastic and inter-collegiate
records for indoor shooting.
Sincerely yours, WILLIAM H. TAFT
Surprise for June Bride
Miss Clara Brennan entertained Friday night at home, the
"Dew Drop Inn Camp," at a kitchen shower in honor of
Miss Loretta Gatens, who is to be a June bride. She was
completely surprised. Many useful presents were
showered upon her. Refreshments were served and a most enjoyable
evening spent by all.

Were Secretly Married
Frank Huntzinger and Miss Effie Chadek surprised their friends
greatly the last of the week when they announced that they had
been married in this city on the 25th of last February. The groom
then went to Canada, where he is in business, but will probably
return to Iowa City soon. The Daily Citizen
