Quarter Century - Happy Reunion of the Law Class of '74
at the Home of A.E. Swisher.
One of the most delightful gathering during the commencement week
has been the reunion of the law class of 1874. At the close of a
quarter of a century of active business life fourteen members of
this class returned to their Alma Mater for happy reunion. With
them came the members still living of the law faculty of that
year. The Hon. C.C. Cole, of Des Moines, Iowa, and the Hon.
Frederick Mott, of Winterset, Iowa. The members of the class
present at this reunion were: Cyrus Beard, L. Brown, C. Cohoon,
H. Davidson, H.F. Fellows, J.H. Fugard, R.M. Haines, Dick Haney,
S.M. Hughes, E.P. Johnson, J.L.E. Peck, John Shortley, E.G.
Smith, A.E. Swisher. It was a matter of most sincere regret to
Mr. Swisher and those present that not all the class could unite
with them in this happy anniversary observance. Yesterday at two
p.m. these boys of '74 were furnished carriages and drove over
the beautiful city, and at three p.m. gathered at the beautiful
home of their classmate, A.E. Swisher, and there remained the
partakers of its charming hospitality until the late hours of the
evening in the most happy and delightful reunion. At 5 p.m. Mrs.
Swisher and her daughters and friends who had joined with her in
doing honor to the boys of '74 served a most bountiful dinner
such as only a well appointed home like that of the Swishers can
provide. During the afternoon and evening, Joseph Barborks, the
well known harpist, from Clinton, Iowa, rendered the sweetest of
music with his elegant harp. After dinner, A.E. Swisher, acting
as toast master, introduced Judges Cole and Mott who in the most
beautiful words and generous love for their now old boys
recounted the past, praised the good lives of the boys and bade
them God speed in the coming years. Each member of the class was
introduced and each gave an account of his twenty-five years of
active practice and work, after which the class completed an
organization by electing A.E. Swisher president, Dick Haney vice
president, and J.H. Fugard secretary, and appointed these
officers a committee to arrange for the next reunion of the class
which it was decided to hold at the home of A.E. Swisher, Iowa
City, five years from this time. There were 64 members of this
class who graduated in 1874. Eight have died. Of those living
thirty-eight have remained in the practice of law, some of whom
are now on the bench. This class has furnished one United States
senator, two congressmen, one governor, one foreign minister, two
judges of state supreme courts, seven nisi prius judges; has one
in the department of justice, Washington, D.C., one in the naval
custom office at Philadelphia, Pa., one in custom office, New
York. Not one has been a failure. This class is not an exception
so far as success is concerned, to other classes before and since
its graduation, that have gone out from the halls of the great
state university of the state of Iowa. The friends of the State
University can be congratulated that one class of one department,
of one year, can in twenty-five years make such a splendid report
of its doing and success. Below is given a list of this class
