To-Day's Fire.
During the thunder storm this afternoon lightning struck the barn of Patrick Murphy, near the glucose works. The fire alarm was turned in, and the firemen and apparatus were soon upon the scene, but the barn burned so quickly that it was too late for them to save anything. Jas. Aldous, who was near the place when the barn was struck, removed the horses which were in the barn at the time. About one ton of hay and four pigs were destroyed in the flames.

While a horse belonging to Lem Hunter, of Scott township, was in the field yesterday during the thunder storn, the animal, which was a valuable one, was struck by lightning and instantly killed.

R.L. Dunlap returned yesterday evening from a business trip in Stewart and Shelby, Iowa. He says that crops in that vicinity are good, corn is all up and the farmers have nothing to compain of.

Dubuque, Ia., June 16 -- The storm was very severe in this locality Monday evening, and one life was lost. George Schirk, a farmer at Cottage Hill, Dubuque county, attempted to cross the Maquoketa river in a wagon, when the wagon box was swept away and he was drowned. The Class of '92 of the collegiate Department Graduate After Four Years of Labor.
The thirty-second commencement of the collegiate department occurred this morning. The audience room was well filled and on the stage sat the faculty and members of the Board of Regents. The University band furnished an especially prepared programme of music. The exercises were opened with invocation by Rev. T.R. Evans, followed by music. The first oration was delivered by Miss Katherine B. Barber. The subject was "Social Hygiene." "The Growth of the Federal Principle" was the subject of Harry S. Richard's oration; and the subject of Miss Laura Clark's was "Choosing" which she treated in a very charm, novel and original manner. After the music by the band, Miss Julia E. Rogers spoke, taking for her subject, "No Blesse Oblige." The next and last speaker was Julien C. Monnet, the subject of whose oration was "The Skeptic Scholar."
[transcribers note: this article went into great detail about the commencement oration topics - I did not transcribe all of it- interested researchers should consult the original paper]
