CHURCH ANNIVERSARY
Next Sunday,
October 13th, the Hope Evang. Lutheran Church at
Germanville, will observe its ninetieth anniversary.
The
beginnings of this congregation date back to the year 1845
(just one year before the state of Iowa was admitted to the Union.) Three
church buildings have been erected by the congregation since its
organization; the first one in 1845, the second in 1862 and the third in
1913. Eighteen ministers have been in charge of the same up to now. The
present church is beautifully located on a hill near Germanville and within
calling distance from the highway to Merrimac and Trenton. The language used
in early times was the German. At present all services are held in English.
During the past few years the congregation has experienced a healthy and
steady growth. There are four organizations within the church; the Ladies'
Aid Society, the Luther League, the Sunday School and the Choir. The
membership of the congregation consists of 214 baptized, 160 confirmed, 146
communing, and 158 contributing members. The congregation which was formerly
affiliated with the Ev. Lutheran Iowa Synod holds now full memberships in
the American Lutheran Church with to splendid seminaries, 1600 ordained
ministers and congregations in nearly every state of the Union. The present
pastor of the church is Rev. J.L. Seitzinger.
There will be
special festival services next Sunday at 1030
a.m., at 2:30 p.m. and at 7:30 p.m. A large group of former ministers of the
church is expected to arrive to speak at the services. The local Choir and
accomplished musicians from Parsons College, Fairfield, Iowa, will give
vocal and instrumental selections. A free sumptious dinner and supper will
be served by the Ladies' Aid Society in the church parlors. A cordial
invitation to attend goes herewith to all.
LOCKRIDGE MOVIE
The
Community Hall Theatre was crowded last Saturday night for
the opening of this new enterprise. The merchants and management of the show
wish to thank those who were in Lockridge and attended the show.
Adjustments
have been made in the equipment and this coming
Saturday night promises a good picture with clear and distinct sound. The
name of the picture this week is "The Midnight Warning" with a good
cast of
characters and a picture every one will enjoy.
No prize will
be given away this week. The prize last week
consisting of Cold Pack Canner was won by Mrs. Will Messer. Next week a
prize will be given.

- Rev. J.A. Cochran is attending the Baptist State Convention in Shenandoah

- Mrs. Ida Mummert of Galesburg is visiting at the home of her brother, Fred
Graff.
- Mrs. Clem Peck of Fairfield called at the parental George Wendling home
Saturday.
- M. Mickey is celebrating his eightieth birthday anniversary today by a
family dinner at home.
- Mrs. Eva Bennett of Pleasant Plain spent a few days this week with her
sister, Mrs. John Boos.
- Mrs. E.V. Peel of Galesburg visited Tuesday at the home of her sister,
Mrs. H.W. Erickson.
- Believe it or not, Grant Jacobson picked four different kinds of apples
from one and only one tree.
- Hommer Jennings of near Mt. Pleasant has been working a few days this week
at the Chris Leu home.
- Work is progressing rapidly on the bank building where Tony Larson will
open his store November 1st
- Mrs. Eva Turner, who has been visiting at the home of her son Earl Turner
returned to her home in Burlington Sunday.
- Grant and Harold Vorhies are home on furlough from their naval duties in
San Diego, California. The boys must be back for duty by October 31.
- Mrs. L.C. Elliott expects to return home this evening from the Jefferson
county hospital. Miss Marie Quick, a practical nurse, will care for her.
- Mr. and Mrs. Housten Sasseen attended a reception Saturday evening in
Richland given for Mrs. Sasseen's brother who was recently married.
- Mrs. Mary Achenbach entertained the Ladies' Aid of Four Corners St. John's
Lutheran church at the home of her daughter, Mrs. L.F. Bogner Tuesday
afternoon.
- Elwin Ryun and Vera Keller attended a birthday party in Burlington
Wednesday evening. The party was planned and carried out in honor of Mr.
Ryun's birthday.
- Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Mickey accompanied Mrs. Mabel Walker and son Bobby
to the University hospital at Iowa City Wednesday where Bobby will be fitted
with a brace for his foot.
- Mr. and Mrs. Fred Gustafson and family, Edward Johnson, Mr .and Mrs.
Edward Sharpe gathered at the home of Frank Erickson Sunday to celebrate Mr.
Erickson's seventy-fifth birthday.
- Mrs. Henry Danielson, L.J. Graf and son Everett, Mrs. Mary Millspaugh,
Charles Millspaugh and son Merrill, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Rivey and family, Mr.
and Mrs. Otto Graf and W. Rivey attended a birthday dinner at the Vance Palm
home northwest of Fairfield Sunday.
- The regular meeting of the Swastika Club was held at the home of Mrs. Fred
Briggs Friday afternoon. The afternoon was spent with fancy work. Those
present were: Mrs. L.H. Linn, Mrs. M.Z. Sharpe, Mrs. Lee Coger, Mrs. Mollie
Boos, Mrs. Leland Linn, Mrs. Grant Jacobson, Mrs. Frank Trabert. At 4 p.m.
the hostess served refreshments.
- Gail Heater, a freshman at Parsons College this year recently pledged to
Zeta Theta Gamma fraternity. This is one of the social prominent
fraternities of the Parsons College campus. The announcing of this pledge
was made public by Dean Hinkhouse following the conclusion of the rush
season.
- The A.E. Club was entertained Friday afternoon by Mrs. V.O. Sodergren.
Eleven members were present: Mrs. W.L. McMickle, Mrs. W.E. Prouty, Mrs. Wm.
Boos, Mrs. L.E. Boos, Mrs. Freddie Rauscher, Mrs. A.F. Johnson, Mrs. Lena
Berg, Mrs. R.A. Linderson, Mrs. Ed Weston, Mrs. Tony Carlson. Mrs. C.A.
Sprott was a guest of honor. Luncheon was served by the hostess.

Mrs. Fred McElwee
-A party was given at the Emery Crane home last Wednesday evening in honor
of Everett Crane, who will soon leave for El Paso, Texas. The evening was
enjoyed by those present and they took their refreshments with them which
was home made ice cream, white and chocolate cake.
- Mrs. Fred McElwee celebrated her sixty-third birthday Tuesday. Those who
came with well filled baskets to eat dinner with her were: Mrs. Lena
Heckenberg and daughters, Mrs. Guy Litton and son, Mrs. Amy Litton, Mrs.
Mary Church, Mrs. Lizzie Wilson, Mr. and Mrs. Elery Litton, Mr .and Mrs.
Arthur Litton, Mrs. Jane Elliott, Mrs. Grace Elliott, Mrs. Ella Barton, Mrs.
Jay Barton and son, Mrs. Thomas McElwee and son. At the noon hour a
bountiful dinner was enjoyed. The men folks all had to leave after dinner,
as they were all busy and the women folks spent the afternoon visiting.
All
departed for their homes wishing Mrs. McElwee many more happy birthdays.
- The Young People enjoyed a weiner roast at the Carroll Crane home last
Friday evening and a jolly good time was enjoyed by those present.
- Mr. and Mrs. Everett McElwee, Mr and Mrs Ray Stanley and sons, Mr. and
Mrs. Jay Barton and children, Mr. and Mrs. Thomas McElwee and son spent
Sunday at the parental Barton home.
- Mr. and Mrs. C.C. Coe of Fairfield spent Sunday at the home of their
sister, Mrs. Elsie Tilford and family and were callers at the McElwee home
in the evening.

- Mrs. George Allender and Wayne visited several days at the parental
Emerson home.
