-Work has begun on the C.B. & Q. R.R. between this place and Ottumwa for a double track; a large force of men are grading the road-bed, and the company is also putting a wrought iron bridge across Cedar creek in place of the wooden one.

PERSONAL

Charley David, Jr., who is keeping books in a drug house at Atchison, Kans., is home for a short visit.
George, Raym. and Ed. Wells were home Sunday for a visit with each other and their parents. George is still at Mr. Pleasant, Raym. at St. Paul, and Ed. at Omaha, and all are in the express business.
Mr. H.O. Young and daughters, Misses Henrietta and Minnie, of Park City, Utah, are in the city this week, visiting Captain Wells and the Jordan families, and are guests at the Captain's. Mr. Young was in the employ of these gentlemen from 1857 to 1860, but going west has grown up with the country as a merchant at Park City and is reputed to be rich.

The secret order of the P.E.O. met at the home of Miss Eva Denny, Thursday evening. Two of our young men embraced the order, being initiated in true and ancient form. The ceremony is described by those unfortunate young men who were spectators as being interesting and impressive. An excellent supper was served after the ceremony of initiation, which each young man was permitted to enjoy after finding the answer to his conundrum.
The above item we clip from the Washington Democrat. The P.E.O.'s of Washington must be of a different order from their sisters here. The young men of this city are not allowed to "embrace the order", but we would not like to say how it is with the individual members. -- Mt. Pleasant Free Press.
