DOTS AND DASHES
The City has done a good think in
getting out a temporary snow plow and cleaning off the streets.
Mrs. John M. Peterson, living south of Lockridge, died
on Friday last after a brief illness of but four days.
Wm. Carmichael, living southeast of Fairfield, sold twenty
head of two-year-old steers last week, at $43 per head.
J.W. Larimore has moved his saw mill from Crow creek to the
old Thompson mill-site on Cedar. He will have it in running order in a short
time.
R.W. Cormac, the miller at the city mills, this city, is
seriously ill with pneumonia.
Marion Conlee, who on account of sickness has been with his
parents in Cedar township for several weeks will return to his home in Fort
Madison on Monday next.
Messrs. Lafe Coop, Frank Moyer and G.W. Hewitt, have been
appointed to appraise the real estate of H.N. West, deceased. They will complete
their work this week.
Dr. Sweet, who had been stopping at the Jones house, in this
city, for a week or more, left the first of the week. He expects to return about
the first of April, when he will remain for two weeks.
The ladies society of the Lutheran church will meet at the
residence of Mr. J.A. Spielman, on Thursday evening, February 12th. A full
attendance is desired as important matters are to be considered.
The large farm of A.B. Scott, north of town, has been sold to
Mr. Thomas McClellan, of Macomb, Ill. Mr. McClellan has taken possession, having
driven his stock through, arriving here Sunday, just in time to escape the big
storm.
J.J. Cummings and J.M. Hinkle again went to Batavia yesterday
morning to take depositions in the Smith vs. Smith case. It will take them all
of this week and probably a good part of next to complete the taking of the
evidence for the defense.
On Monday during the snow storm, Mr. Skelly, living northwest
of town, braved the elements and delivered fifteen hogs which he had sold to
Templeton & Wisecarver. It takes a good deal of nerve to start with a load
of live stock on a day like Monday with the roads in such bad condition. Mr.
Skelly had to finally unload and finish the trip by driving his hogs into town.
Last Friday at Agency City, at the residence of his
son-in-law, Mr. Shadford, occurred the death in his 86th year of Mr. John
Clinton. Mr. Clinton was an old resident of this county and well known to many
of our readers, having lived for a number of years one and a half miles north of
town on the Brighton road. His remains were brought to this city for interment
Saturday evening, the funeral services having been conducted at Agency.
Of the dour star route mail carriers from this point, only
one got through Monday and Tuesday, the big snow storm and deep snow keeping all
the rest at home. It was just about as well, thought, for the trains not running
made very little mail to got out. Charles Crane, the carrier from this point to
Birmingham and Mt. Zion, started Monday as usual and though the snow was badly
drifted all along the route, he made the trip to Mt. Zion all right, and got as
far back as the Mills place, when his team got down in the deep snow in the
lane, and it was all that he and Mr. Hope who was with him, could do to get the
team out and get to a farm house, where they stayed all night. Tuesday forenoon
they came on foot, Crane carrying the mail on his back. Neither Frank Moore, who
carriers to Glasgow, nor A. Rose, the Richland carrier, nor Dave Koons, the
Abingdon carrier, ventured out.
PERSONAL
Mrs. Sharp and daughter Cora were visiting at Tipton last
week.
Will Junkin returned home from the mountains last week, and
will remain until spring.
David Heron, of Boise City, Idaho, is visiting his mother
near Lockridge. This is his first here since 1860.
A.J. Skelly, formerly of this place and will know to the
Tribune readers, is now living in Summerhill, Pa.
Miss Lulu Matthews, of Vincennes, Lee county, is in the city
visiting her cousin, Mrs. Geo. W. Dahlman.
J.M. Hammer has returned after six weeks' vacation visiting
among friends and relatives at Wrightsville, Penna.
W.S. Mayer, of Washington, D.C. who has been here for some
time, started south to visit the Exposition and will be gone about a month.
Hon. M.M. Bleakmore, who is well known to Jefferson county
people, has been in Fairfield several days making arrangements to return her to
live.
C.C. Risk and wife who left last week for New Orleans and the
south generally. They intend staying at New Orleans for about two weeks and then
spending four weeks more visiting the most interesting places in the south.
~~~~~~~
