KLAN KLONKLAVE A SUCCESS
The third annual klonklave of Jackson County Ku Klux Klan, held
at the Gibson field north of the fair grounds, was held Saturday,
August 7, the date being postponed from the preceding Saturday on
account of the weather and roads at that time. Saturday, Aug. 7,
however, was an ideal day, and while the afternoon crowd was not
so large as usual, due to the fact that most farmers were
threshing, the evening crowd far surpassed that of former years,
it being estimated that eight thousand people were on the
grounds. An unusually large contingent was present from Dubuque,
which included a band, drill teams, male quartet and dramatic
company, while Clinton, Scott and Muscatine counties were also
well represented. The day and evening program as advertised was
carried out in full and the naturalization ceremony, which
concluded the evening program, was a beautiful and spectacular
sight.
Shipley Inquest
San Diego, Calif., August 13 - An inquest is scheduled in San
Diego into the death of Herman Everett Shipley, a former resident
of Tipton, Iowa, where his wife and two children reside. Shipley
was a chauffeur for Jackie Coogan, child film star. He had
recently been discharged from his position by Mr. Coogan.
Shipley's body was found in a garage at the Coogan ranch near
Campoya. Los Angeles detectives who found the body said Shipley
had ended his own life by shooting himself through the head.
Shipley left a suicide note that asked his parents in Tipton be
notified and his body be taken to Tipton for burial. Shipley was
sought in connection with the shooting of Joseph Block, a
watchman at the Coogan home in Los Angeles last Tuesday. Block,
who was seriously wounded in an exchange of shots with Shipley,
has a chance of recovery physicians say.
