VIGILANTES TO MEET NOVEMBER 3RD
John A. Davis of Des Moines, head of the Vigilante organizations
of Iowa has advised Sheriff Dye that he will be in Maquoketa on
Tuesday November 3, and asks that a meeting of the vigilantes of
the county and members of the vigilant forces of the banks be
held at the First National Bank on the evening of the 3rd. This
organization is doing and has done very effective work in some
localities and yeggmen well know the counties where the
organization is perfected and is ready to function. A committee
was formed here about three years ago, but has never been
perfected and it is hoped that a full attendance of the members
as well as representatives from the banks in the county will
attend this meeting. Perhaps it would be well to wait until we
experience a modern bank robbery or hold-up before becoming
interested in the defense of our treasures. You recall the story
of "locking the barn after the horse was stolem" don't
you?
