CAVE DISCOVERED
A large subterranean cave was recently "opened to the
public" in a unique and rather costly manner on the farm of
N. Sutton, south of Canton and near the "big spring."
The discovery was made by an unfortunate steer which lost it's
life as a result of it's contribution to the varied and
interesting topographical features of the surrounding country.
The animal was grazing in a pasture on an elevated ridge
overlooking the Maquoketa river and broke through the thin
surface of earth, and with several square feet of debris, went
crashing to the bottom. He was discovered by some boys and later
was brought to terra firma by the aide of a block and tackle, but
soon died from the injuries received in his hasty tour of
exploration. The cavern is a few miles northwest of the famous
Maquoketa Caves that yearly attract many sightseers.
