HARRY BREED HAS NEWSPAPER OVER 100 YEARS OLD - MANY OTHER
OLD RELICS
Among the Collection is an Account Book, the First Entry in Which
is in 1810
Anyone interested in old articles or keepsakes will find
something very interesting by paying Harry Breed a visit and take
a look at some of the articles he has that date back for several
years. He is working on a family history and in tracing out some
of the branches of the family runs across some really unique and
interesting things.
Recently he received from his grandfather, who lives at
Galveston, Texas, a copy of the Millersburg, Ohio, Gazette, dated
May 29, 1828. It is a four page paper of four columns on each
page. The columns are some wider than the newspaper columns of
today. As might be imagined the wording of the articles and
spelling of some of the words in a paper published over 101 years
ago are quite different to the modern paper. The paper is in a
very good state of preservation notwithstanding the fact that it
went through the Galveston flood of 1900. The paper and ink used
are better quality than that of the present day or it would not
be in as good a state of preservation as it is. It was originally
the property of Harrys great grandfather, John Breed, born
in 1782 and who died in 1853.
Another keepsake Harry received from his grandfather is an
account book of this grandfathers in which the first charge
entry is under date of September 16, 1810, and the last date is
in 1853. This book was also a participant in the Galveston flood
and is in a very good state of preservation and contains some
very interesting entries.
Both of these are truly valuable specimens of antiques on which,
it would be difficult to place a tangible value. At some future
date we hope to give our readers a few extracts from the paper
and account book.
