NOTES FROM DENOVA.
Denova, Aug. 31, 1896. [Correspondence.]  The Notes were written in great
haste last week and several important items were omitted in consequence.
Among them was the advent of a new son at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Edgar
Scott.  Also Messrs. David and Aaron Mills returned from Kansas where they
had been called by the serious illness of their brother, Samuel.  They have
no hope of his recovery….Mr. Hugh McCoy, who has been assisting Mr. Lamm in
his store, for several weeks, has returned to his home in Hillsboro…..A very
unlooked for wedding was solemnized in our neighborhood last Thursday, the
contracting parties being Mrs. Mary Frazier, one of our most highly
respected widow ladies, and Mr. John Coffin, of Earlham, Iowa.  Mrs. Frazier
had been a widow nearly thirty years.  She had lived to see all her children
married, and we feel certain she did the right thing in getting married
herself.  They expect to remain on her farm near Denova….Joe and Emerson
Brown pulled in Monday with a fine load of melons from near Lowell…..Mrs.
Pamela Maxwell died last night at the home of her daughter, Mrs. W.D.
Trueblood, after a long and painful illness.  The funeral will take place
to-morrow from the Friends Church at 10 o’clock….Mr. Wm. Beard is visiting
his father, uncle Enoch Beard.  He preached at Cedar Sunday evening…..Mr.
and Mrs. P.L. Brown left last Thursday morning to visit some two
weeks ….Mrs. John Wood and Mrs. Addie Campbell start soon for Mrs. Campbell’s
home at Los Angeles, California.  Mr. Wood will follow as soon as he can
settle up his business here.  Mrs. Campbell has been visiting all summer
with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Phillip Scott, of Salem, and brothers and
sisters and friends….Rev. Hogle preached his farewell sermon at Wesley
Chapel on Sunday afternoon.  Who will be the next?

THE COOPER TRIAL ON
Big Crowds in Attendance to Hear the Smutty Testimony

In spite of the heavy rain the court room was crowded to-day by an eager
crowd attracted by a savory dish of scandal that the COOPER seduction case
promised. Henry B. COOPER of Salem, was indicted in March 1895 on the charge
of seducing Miss Etta BROWN, the 19 year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Eli
BROWN, of the same place, and for the support of her child. It appears that
COOPER commenced to go with Miss BROWN in the fall of 1893 and continued his
intimate relations until February 1895 when he suddenly skipped out. Early
this spring he was located in California and Sheriff Putnam went out and
brought him home. He was released on bail after pleading not guilty, and the
case continued for one reason and another until this term when trial was
determined upon. COOPER is represented by L.A. PALMER and state attorney
KOPP is assisted by Judge W.I. BABB.
Considerable difficulty was found in getting a jury, but finally the
following were empaneled: Ed. LAUGER, J.G. MAGDEFRAU, H.G. KING, Thomas
HENTHORN, Henry LEE, L.F. TAGUE, Geo. GUISLMAN, Ed. RUGG, John SPEERS, John
COBB, James NUNLEY and Daniel CRONIN. The first witness called was Miss
BROWN herself. She is a pretty, innocent looking girl and told her story
with hesitancy, but determination. She told how COOPER had gone with her
nearly two years, calling at least once a week and frequently oftener,
taking her out to church parties and dances. A pair of bracelets given her
on a Thanksgiving, a ring on Christmas and a breast pin on her birth day
were exhibited. She told of his protestations of love, of his promise of
marriage before and after he accomplished her ruin, and of his final flight
to escape the penalty of the law. The line of defense is to break down the
girl's character by the introduction of witnesses who are said to be willing
to swear to her unchaste character. COOPER's reputation will suffer nothing
no matter how the case goes and he seems perfectly indifferent as to the
result. He habitually wears a forgotten smile and a withering flower at his
lapel. He probably fails to realize that the doors of the penitentiary are
yawning for him. Quite a number of witnesses are here from Salem.
