Mrs. Michael Schmitt, one of the early settlers of this place (first Crawford, then Monona County) passed away last Saturday morning at the home of her son Peter at Plainview, Nebraska. She had been quite ill for the past few weeks, and her death has been hourly expected. The remains reached Dunlap Saturday evening, and were taken to the residence of her daughter, Mrs. Jacob Fackelman. The funeral was held Sunday morning in the St. Patrick’s Church where, notwithstanding the severe freezing weather, a considerable number of neighbors gathered with the relatives to pay their tribute of respect to the memory of their old and respected friend.Mrs. Michael Schmitt (Elizabeth Graber) was born in Bavaria, Germany 77 years ago. She came to the United States with her parents in early childhood, and settled at Iowa City, and was there joined in marriage to Michael Schmitt in her early womanhood. About 50 years ago, the family moved to Dunlap, and a few years later located on a farm on the Willow, which remained the family home until after the decease of her husband about 9 years ago.Mrs. Schmitt was the mother of seven children: Frank, George, Peter, John, Mrs. Jacob Fackleman, Mrs. J.T. Hanigan, Mrs. Chester Hunter, all of whom except George of Plainview, who was detained by illness, were present for the funeral. In the death of Mrs. Schmitt, there passes away one of the more hardy pioneers who bravely faced the hardships incident to building up a new country, and laid the foundation by which the present wealth and comforts are possible. She is buried in Pleasant Hill Cemetery.
