OBITUARY

The death of Michael Schmitt occurred at the family residence in Willow Township, Monona County on Friday, May 19, after a short but painful illness. He had been afflicted with asthma for some time, but, although distressed was not considered in a critical condition until complications set in which resulted fatally. The immediate cause of death was heart trouble. The deceased was a native of Bavaria, Germany coming to America when a mere youth. He loved the institutions of American freedom. With his family, he was one of the pioneers on The Willow (First Crawford, then Monona County), and in those early days when the privations and hardships were almost beyond endurance, Mike’s cheering words and merry laugh helped many a despondence one to turn a new leaf, and look on the bright side of life. Jolly, whole-souled Mike, honest to a fault, the friend of all, the enemy of none, he will be missed. The funeral occurred at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Dunlap on Sunday. The Rev. Father Hanson delivering the sermon from the text “Seek First the Kingdon of God-Afterwards All Things Shall be Added” to a large and sympathetic audience. Besides the widow (Elizabet Graber Schmitt), there remains to mourn his loss four sons and three daughters, a large number of grandchildren and a host of friends. Michael Schmitt was born December 19, 1835, and died May 19, 1905. He is buried in Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Dunlap, Iowa.
