John Willis Trewet
After a lingering illness of many months, John Willis Trewet,
more familiarly known to this neighbors and friends as Uncle
John, passed to his eternal reward on Sunday, August 20, 1922 at
the age of 86 years 9 months and 10 days.
John Willis Trewet was born in Orange county, North Carolina, on
November 10, 1835. At the age of seven years he moved with his
parents to Independence, Missouri where for some fourteen years
he with his elder brothers, freighted across the plains with ox
and mule teams. When about twenty one years of age he came to the
old home place in Fremont county where his father had already
settled. Shortly afterward he and his brother William started
westward going to the Montana gold fields. After roughing it for
a year or more among the mountains they returned to Iowa from
Fort Benton, Montana to Omaha by way of flatboat on the Missouri
river and from there to his home near Sidney where he has since
resided.
He was united in marriage to Dinah Ballinger on November 27, 1869
and to this union ten children were born, three sons and seven
daughters. Three daughter died in infancy and another daughter,
Mrs. Edith Agnes Fredrickson, departed this life on June 24,
1922. Those left to mourn the loss of a loving and devoted
husband and father are the wife, three sons and three daughters,
Thomas Trewet of Fort Morgan, Colorado, Rose McDaniel of
Ferndale, Washington, Ellen McDaniel of Council Bluffs, Earl and
Ramond Trewet of Sidney and Mrs.Iva Tyner of Randolph. Besides
these he leaves eighteen grandchildren, and three great
grandchildren, also numerous other relatives and friends.
In the year 1878, Mr. Trewet united with the Newlight church at
Lacy Grove and has lived a faithful, Christian life. Always
devoted to his home and family, he will be sadly missed from the
family circle and from the community in which he was long an
upright and honored citizen, friend and neighbor. Funeral
services were held from the home northwest of Sidney, Monday
afternoon conducted by Rev. J. A. Howard of Sidney. Interment was
made in Lacy Grove cemetery near the spot which for so many years
has been his home.
Lewis For State Senator
O. G. Lorimor of Hamburg received a letter last week from J. F.
Lewis of Ekalaka, Montana, stating that he is the nominee of the
democratic party for state senator from his district. He thinks
that due to a factional fight in the district he will have little
difficulty in landing at election time. Lewis, or "J.
F.", as he was commmonly known, while editor of the Herald
for a number of years, is an old newspaper man, writer and
photographer. His experience has been such as to fit him for the
office he seeks and we hope he wins in a walk and he will too if
merit counts for anything in Montana. John is a mighty good
fellow, always attended to his own business, never had anyone to
help him take care of it, for he never married and it can be said
that he is his own boss. John is a student still, after years of
studying, and in the event the Montana folks see fit to elect him
as their senator, we are confident that they will be represented
by as true a man as ever breathed the salubrious air of Montana.
