Webber - Grindle
Miss Nellie Webber, one of Sidney's girls, and Curtis Grindle of
near McPaul, stole a march on their friends last Wednesday
evening, March 6, and quietly went to the Christian parsonage in
Thurman, where they were married by Rev. Kindig. The bride is the
oldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Al. Webber. She was educated in
the Sidney schools and since her graduation has been a very
successful teacher in the rural schools of the county. She is an
attractive young lady and can count as her friends all who know
her. Mr. Grindle is a comparative stranger in Sidney but no doubt
his bride has chosen a worthy helpmate. He is subject to the
draft and expects to be called in the next contingent, so in the
meantime they will live with his sister and Mrs. Grindle will
complete her term of school at Bartlett. All wish these young
people happiness.

Death of Mrs. Isabel Lowe
Upon receiving word of the critical illness of Mrs.
Isabel Lowe at her home in Cadams, Nebraska, W. L. Van Eaton,
Mrs. Ben Davis and Mrs. J. J. Van Eaton left for that place
Saturday morning. Mrs. Lowe died Monday and was buried Tuesday
afternoon at Superior, Nebraska. Mrs. Lowe will be remembered by
our old citizens, as she was Isabel Van Eaton before her marriage
and lived in this vicinity when a girl. She was a sister of J. J.
Van Eaton. The Sidney relatives who attended the funeral returned
home yesterday.
War Comes Home
Edwin Todd, son of Mr. and Mrs. Q. C. Todd of Tabor, and member
of the Rainbaow division doing service in France, lost his life
while in the trenches one day recently as the result of an
accidental discharge of a hand grenade. "Ted" is the
first boy from this county to give up his life in the struggle,
and a county grieves with the parents. Memorial services were
held Sunday.

Since time began the restlessness of mankind has choked the
channels of traffic in a mad desire for a change--in an endless
search for an intangible something. Some seek a change of
conditions, others a change of climate: some are charitable
enough to seek a change of environment in order to raise the
standard of society in their new home, while still others seek a
change by request, in the interest of society at home. To
paraphrase the words of one of our wisemen: "Some men are
born changeable, others achieve 'change' while still others have
a change thrust upon them."
Far be it from us to infer that any of our Iowa people should be
found in the latter class. However, many would justly fall in the
second classification, and still more numerous are those whom we
should classify as "changeable", for away out west, in
Sunny Southern California, is to be found an innumerable host of
Hawkeyes. Various have been the motives that have prompted the
exodus of the past 20 years, but of one thing we are certain,
their new home has not suffered by their coming. The standard of
every community in which they have settled has been raised,
morally, socially and financially.
These Iowa people naturally have interests more or less in
common, one with the other, and this feeling led to the
establishment, a number of years ago, of the Iowa Association of
Southern California, which is incorporated and has headquarters
in Los Angeles. Twice each year this organization has a grand
picnic reunion, at which there have been known to be in
attendance as many as 70,000 at one picnic. The last such
gathering was held in March and Fremont county was represented by
a strong contingent. Those registering from that county were made
up principally of residents of southern California, but a number
of winter tourists also registered. Together with their
