Freaks From the Cornfield
When Dame Nature tires of the task of producing in Fremont county
cornfields enough of the golden ears to feed the multitude, she
occasionally steps from the beaten path and tries her hand at
inventing something on the freakish order. Many such specimens
have been found during the present husking season and two very
interesting ones are now on exhibition of this office. One was
brought in by Harry Porter found on the "Red" Garrett
farm south of Sidney. It is an almost perfectly formed ear of
good length, and all around the butt are eight separate half
conical ears about three inches long, drooping downward, having
much the appearance of one of those fuzzy hoods worn by the girls
on skating expeditions. The other is a twin ear found by John
Vaughan on the "Wilson Knob" near the Nishna river.
Within one husk are two well formed ears, merging into one at the
butt. The ears are slightly under standard size, but sound, and
in appearance, even to the formation of the grain, are as near
alike as the proverbial two peas.
