Dr. Cole of Thurman is building himself a large and beautiful
residence, as is also Mr. M. McCartney.
[submitters notes: Frank Miller, of the Des Moines Sunday
Register for Dec. 21, 1969, has his water color of Dr.
Cole's home on the front page of the paper's PICTURE magazine,
subtitled "A home in Fremont County where it's Christmas all
the year". Inside the front cover, Miller writes "In
the town of Thurman in Fremont County is a big white house that
is decorated the year-round for Christmas. In it lives Mrs. Pearl
Cole, the widow of Dr. Harold Cole. She remembers many
Christmases here even back when guest arrived by horse and buggy.
They used to step off on the stoop and tie their horses to the
hitching post still out there in front. These are kept as
reminders of the past. As for the Christmas decorations on the
house and tree, they are left in place all year because:
"Help is hard to find...it is easier to leave them up."
THE SCENE....a year-round reminder of many Christmases past and
of the Christmas ahead.--Frank Miller."
The stoop, the hitching railing, the Christmas lights are all
included in Miller's water color.--W.F.]
