Twenty-Two Seniors Graduated Last Thursday
A class of fifteen girls and seven boys received diplomas from
Clermont high school Thursday evening, May 23. Of this group
Thelma Lyngaas, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Engebret Lyngaas, was
named valedictorian and Rita Rounds, only daughter of Postmaster
Rounds salutatorian. The selections were based on the highest
averages for the four-year period of study. Members of the class
of 1940 were:
Eleanor Anderson, Dorothy Brorby, James Gilbert, Phyllis Gress,
Vino Gress, Mary Guritz, Ammazette Henderson, Eunice Landsgard,
James Loftsgard, Thelma Lyngaas, Janet Olson, Minnie Olson, Myra
Olson, Labanda Olson, Leo Ostlie, Belva Olson, Glynn Paulson,
Bernard Schrader, Andree Taitro and Rita Rounds.
Attendance Certificates Awarded
This year as in previous years, certificates were awarded to
pupils of grades 1 to 8 inclusive, having perfect attendance
records for the entire school term. A mark of tardiness for this
same period placed anyone on the ineligible list. At the 8th
grade graduation exercises held at the high school auditorium
Wednesday evening, Supt. Theo. C. Ressler made awards to the
following: Laura Mae Wickham, Donald Yauslin, Gordon Meyer, Norma
Schave, Vernon Loftsgard, Carmen Loftsgard, Doris Sampson,
Herbert Kaufmann, Jack Flynn, Doris Gilbert, Joyce Amundson,
Arthel Meyer, Phyllis Schweinefus, Betty Follett and Lavern
Stumme.
At this time Supt. Ressler also awarded certificates of promotion
to the following 8th grade pupils: Clair Rice, Bertha Jane Olson,
Marvin Larson, Betty Follett, Leonard Olson, Frances Kaufmann,
Danny Rounds, Lavern Stumme, Ruth Krueger, Patricia Flynn, Loyce
Erickson, Lillian Kaufmann, Richard Crowe, Joyce Amundson,
Annabelle Loftsgard, Veryle Paulson and Charles Shipton.
Local
-Mr. and Mrs. George Still of Waterloo, visited Sunday with Mr.
and Mrs. W.R. Blake.
-Mr. and Mrs. Anson J. Priest were dinner guests in the McGreevey
home Sunday.
-Royal Smith of Earlham, spent Saturday and Sunday with his
friend, Lloyd Anderson.
-W.A. Delaney of Waterloo, visited Tuesday with his sister, Mrs.
H.F. Becker and family.
-Viola Koland came from Cedar Rapids Saturday and spent the week
end with her mother, Mrs. G. Koland.
-Mrs. O. Alfred Olson of Waterloo, spent Friday and Saturday as a
guest of Mr. and Mrs. Jesse Olson and family.
-Mrs. Alfred Wenger returned Sunday from Volga City where she had
been visiting her son, Lester Wenger and family.
-Clyde Malone of Aledo, Ill., and Lavanda Smith of Davenport,
spent Sunday with the latter's parents, Mr. and Mrs. George
Smith.
-Mrs. Ward Tupper visited in the home of her daughter and
husband, Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Mechelson, from Thursday until
Monday of this week.
-Mr. and Mrs. Harry Cooney and Harold, returned to their home at
Iowa City Sunday. They had visited in the parental, Mrs. Mary
Tatro home since the preceding Thursday.
-James Loftsgard took the bus to Cedar Rapids Friday where on
Saturday he resumed work as a clerk in a grocery store. Similarly
employed last summer, he stays with his aunts, Etta and Irene
Opperud.
-Mr. and Mrs. John Quinn of Lewistown, Montana, are spending a
few weeks at the Ed Quinn home north of Clermont.
-Mrs. Wm. Crowe accompanied Mrs. E.H. Dibble and Lovila, to
Fayette Monday where they attended commencement exercises at
Upper Iowa University. Jane and Helen Dibble were members of the
graduating class.
-Mr. and Mrs. Robert Sperry and son moved over the week end to
Cedar Rapids where their new home will be made. Mr. and Mrs. Wm.
Belscher, newlyweds, are living in the Blake apartment on the
first floor which the Sperry family occupied.
-An eight pound daughter was born Sunday, May 19, to Mr. and Mrs.
D.C. Burgett at the university hospital at Iowa City. Mother and
child were brought home from there yesterday. The Burgetts have
three other children, Robert, Ronald and Betty.
-Mr. and Mrs. Earl Simpson and Richard, of Mt. Vernon, spent
Sunday wit her mother, Mrs. Clara Helgerson and family. Mrs.
Norman Current, now of Cedar Rapids, accompanied them and was a
guest in the W.R. Blake home. Mrs. Current is better known to
Clermont residents as LeNore Simpson.
-Funeral services are to be held at the Norway church on Friday
for Ole Houg, brother-in-law of Mrs. Harold Landsgard, of
Clermont. Mr. Houg, who had been ill for a long time, died Monday
at his home in St. Olaf.
Archbishop Beckman Gives Confirmation Sermon
His Excellency, the Most Rev. Francis J.L. Beckman, S.T.D.,
Archbishop from Dubuque, confirmed a class of twenty-six persons
in St. Peter's church Saturday, May 25. This event was unique in
the fact that four members of this group were from one family,
with five other families being represented by a brother and
sister. Members of the class were:
Margaret Ann Becker, Walter Francis Becker, Donald Bertore
Bigler, Mary Lou Bigler, Ethel LeVerle Boyle, Marjorie Fern
Boyle, Shirley Irene Boyle, John Lawrence Calahan, Joseph Edward
Calahan, Mary Virginia Calahan, Paul Francis Calahan, Anna Mary
Crowe, Richard Everett Crowe, Norma Jean Finnegan, John Andrew
Flynn, Patricia Ann Flynn, Sheldon Dean Kohls, Joris Aloysious
Martin, Viola Olive Martin, Daniel Charles Rounds, Rita Kathleen
Rounds, Delores Emile Schupanitz, Madonna Georgeen Trudo, Walter
Tamaladge Vinton, Agnes Augusta Ward and Kathryn Jo Waters.
Attend Funeral of Mrs. Kelly
W.I. Kelly, Anna and John, and Mrs. A.J. Priest attended the
funeral services held Saturday morning at 9 o'clock for Mrs.
Mattie Kelly at Mount Rose chapel, La Crosse, Wis. Mrs. Kelly, a
sister-in-law of W.I. Kelly, died Wednesday, May 22, at a La
Crosse hospital. Her son, Rev. Fr. Kelly, officiated at the
service. Also surviving are two other sons, Paul and Emmet, both
of Waterloo, and three daughters, Sister Dolerine, of Carol,
Sister Virginia Clare, of St. Rose Convent, La Crosse, Wis., and
Bernadette, of Waterloo. Kenneth Joyce, John Kelly, Paul Kelly,
Joseph Kelly and Joseph Blaschley were pallbearers.
