Iowa Murderer Arrested Today
Cedar Rapids, Ia., Dec. 23 - An arrest may be made here today,
according to Coroner R.A. Vorphal, for the murder of a 2-day-old
infant whose frozen body was found on the right-of-way of the
Illinois Central railroad near Rogers station this county, late
Saturday. Indications point to a Manchester, Ia., woman as the
unnatural mother in the case, and the coroner is now checking up
on a woman who bought tickets at Manchester Saturday for this
city and way points. The body of the infant, a female, was tossed
from the women's wash-room of the train, according to the
coroner. The length of time it lay near the tracks indicated it
was thrown from a morning train. The body was partly frozen. A
handkerchief was tied tightly about the neck and its mouth was
crammed with parts of a local newspaper. Coroner Vorphal checked
up on all persons buying tickets from here to Manchester and all
way points, but has eliminated most of them from further
investigation. He indicated he is working on an important clew
but refused to divulge it until an arrest is made.
