OBITUARY - Mrs. John DeLair
Betsey Elizabeth Shepherd was born February 7, 1947, in Ogle County, Ill. Here she grew to womanhood, securing what education the public schools at that time offered. On April 9, 1866, she married John DeLair.

They remained in Illinois for some years after their marriage and thirty-eight years ago came to Iowa and located on a farm about five miles from Hazleton, where they remained some eighteen years. It is now twenty years since the family became residents of the town of Hazleton. Mrs. DeLair has been in failing health for five years, but last November she grew worse, and since that time she was confined to the bed much of the time. Three weeks before her death, she and her husband went out to their daughter’s, Mrs. Fred Hillman, living two miles south of town, where she passed away on May 7.

The deceased was the mother of four children, George of Waterloo, Will who resides in Minnesota, Mrs. Minnie Gilson of Waterloo, Mrs. Maud Hillman of Hazleton. There are six grandchildren. Mrs. DeLair was the last of a family of five children.

Many years ago Mrs. DeLair was converted, joined the Methodist church on probation and planned later to be received in full connection but on the day appointed could not be present on account of sickness. She was a great sufferer but bore her suffering uncomplainingly. The sympathy of all goes out to the bereaved husband in his loneliness, as in his declining years he mourns the departure of her who has been his companion and helper for nearly a half century.

Funeral services were held on May 9, 1913, at the Hazleton M. E. church at 2:30 p. m. and were conducted by Rev. W. E. Ross, the pastor. The body rests in the Hazleton cemetery.
