Masonville Man Tells of Unique Weapons
Publication in a recent issue of the Telegraph-Herald
of an item regarding the discovery of a shotgun in the form of a
can has put M. Mulvehill of Masonville, Iowa in a reminiscent
mood. He writes that he saw one in Farley in 1866 which had been
brought out from Dubuque. The unique weapons were considered very
dangerous and for a time persons who attempted to tote them as
canes suffered arest and paid fines. The shotgun-canes were
originated by the guerillas in the South during the Civil War,
according to Mr. Mulvehill.
Iowa Teacher Lives In Rooms Fitted With Royal Funishings
Mason City, Ia., May 14 - A Mason City school teacher
and a Chicago Red Cross nurse living in a palatial three room
apartment furninshed entirely from a palace which was once the
property of Ex-Emperor Wilhelm of Germany, with a Greek orphanage
established in the rest of the palace, sounds like a chapter from
the Arabian nights but it is as real as Iowa's late spring.
Miss Addie Harris of Mason City, a graduate of the University of
Iowa and a member of the Phi Beta Kappa honorary scholastic
fraternity, is the teacher. Miss Mary Wood, a Red Cross nurse
from Chicago who is in hospital work, is the other girl. Miss
Harris left the United States for Adana, Celicia, Turkey, where
she was a director of an American school for girls for three
years. In January of this year she assumed directorship of the
orphanage at Corfu, Greece, where the ex-kaiser's palace is
located.
