DEATH OF A DUBUQUE SOLDIER
The following item from the Chicago Tribune of
the 20th first gave the notice to his family of the death
of Francis P. Quinn. His mother resides on Bluff Street between
9th and 10th, and this was the first information she had of the
sad affair. He was well known here and had many friends, he left
last week to rejoin his regiment.
The body of Sergeant Major Francis P. Quinn, 96th Illinois
Volunteer Infantry, one of the heroes of the bloody battlefield
of Chickamauga, was found yesterday afternoon, about 3
oclock, firmly embedded in the ice at the foot of Wolcott
Street. A police officer brought the deceased to the North Market
Station House, and the Coroner held an inquest, the result of
which was a verdict of accidental drowning. The pockets of the
dead man contained his furlough and descriptive roll, and from
these and other papers, the fact was learned that he a shot
through the right lung on the 20th of September last, that he was
subsequently captured by the enemy and paroled, and that he was
sent home on furlough. He was on his way to rejoin his regiment
when he fell into the river and was drowned.
