RIOT AT WEST DUBUQUE
Rumor says that a disturbance occurred at the Stone Brewery, in
West Dubuque, last night, in which firearms were freely used,
resulting in the death of one Irishman and the wounding of two
others. It seems that a party of Germans had assembled in the
Brewery for the purpose of dancing and were thus enjoying
themselves when a number of Irish miners attempted to enter the
room and make trouble. They were resisted only by a fastening of
the doors. This so excited them that they immediately commenced
breaking in the windows with stones and other missiles. The
Germans in defense, as we are told, found it necessary to resort
to firearms. Three of the Irishmen were shot, one of whom has
since died. We give this statement as it was told to us. It may
however vary somewhat from the facts in the case, which we
suppose will be brought out by a legal investigation of the
affair.
