Dickinson County's Consolidated Schools
The members of the school board of Waukee, Dalla county, Iowa,
recently traveled over 400 miles inspecting the consolidated
schools throughout northern Iowa, and upon their return had the
following to say of the schools they visited and one can readily
see by the write-up they presented to their people at home how
favorably the Consolidated schools in Dickinson county compared
with those in other counties.
"Our first stop was in Buena Vista county and at the City of
Marathon. This place has been consolidated longer than any in
Iowa. The school building is being re-modeled at an expense of
$20,000 and will when completed be modern in every respect.
Sioux Rapids, Linn Grove, High View, and Rembrandt all in the
same county were visited the following day. To say this county is
enthusiastic is putting it mildly. Already two-thirds of the
county is consolidated and other districts will soon be moved
into a $65,000 building. Linn Grove has a magnificent structure
which is the pride of the community. High View was interesting it
being a country consolidation. They employ four to five teachers
and have eighty-five enrollment. The janitor occupies the upper
story and his wife boards the teachers. They have added more
territory. Rembrandt has an old building made of cement blocks
and has no modern conveniences. There are 26 sections in the
district and 215 pupils, seven teachers.
From here we drove into Clay county and passed two poorly
equipped consolidations.
At Terril in Dickinson county a town of perhaps 200 population we
found a $55,000 building. They have consolidated a whole
township, have 300 enrollment, nine bus drivers who are paid from
$40 to $60 per month. A number of former Dallas county people are
located near Terril. We called on Clarence Dack and Frank Hanlon.
We found them highly pleased with the school. Dr. Dack has 160
acres of land worth $150 per acre probably and his taxes on this
and all personal property amounted to only $167 this year. Such a
building, such equipment, country children enjoying city
advantages, we thought, will Waukee do it, can we measure up with
the best. Dack says you can, you have much more wealth than we
have. But we are first in Dallas county.
At Estherville we saw an up-to-date city school and a $120,000
equipment. At Superior and Arnolds Park we found just what we
wanted to see, buildings constructed for conditions similar to
our own. These buildings cost around $35,000 but could not be
replaced at that figure now as materials are highter. These
buildings will accommodate 300 pupils.
