Gov. Kendall Will Seek Re-election - Hammill, Burbank,
Gibson and McClenahan Also Want Second Terms
Des Moines, Jan 23 (Associated Press) - Governor N.E.
Kendall, Lieutenant Governor John Hammill, Treasurer of State
W.J. Burbank, Attorney General Ben J. Gibson, Secretary of State
W.C. Ramsay, State Auditor Glenn Haynes and P.E. McClenahan,
state superintendent of public instruction, will be candidates to
succeed themselves at the June primary election, is became known
today when the officers named informally announced they were in
the race.
Only Mr. Burbank, Mr. Ramsay and Mr. McClenahan are expected to
be opposed in the primary. For many years there has been a sort
of gentleman's agreement among the party leaders that should an
incumbent in state office desire a second term, there should be
no opposition from others of his party unless for extraordinary
reasons.
The candidacy of Mr. Burbank last year was an exception to the
rules. The race for the republican nomination of superintendent
of public instruction already has resolved itself into a three
cornered contest with P.E. McClenahan, W.H. Bender, recently
dismissed as director of vocational education, and Miss Mae
Francis, formerly an inspector in the office of Mr. McClenahan,
in the race.
