THE STATE
Croquet picnic parties are the cheese in Muscatine
society.
Anamosa wants to utilize its water power by
establishing a paper mill.
At De Soto, Friday, a little son of four years, son of a
Mr. Schneider, fell in the river and was drowned.
The Des Moines Journal notes the death of Dr. H.H. Saylor,
who built his cabin on the site of the capital in 1843.
The residence of Daniel Travis, near Cedar Rapids, was
cremated last Saturday. Cause a defective flue.
Graham & Cook are building a lime kiln near Davenport,
with a capacity of one hundred and fifty bushels daily.
Wm. J. Orr, a brakeman, fell from a train near Wilton,
Saturday morning, and was instantly killed, the wheels passing over his body and
head lengthwise.
Three children of Mr. Armitage, in Cherokee county,
recently ate wild parsnips. One of them died and the other two were saved with
great difficulty.
A new post office, Maple Grove, has been established in
Madison county and E.G. Perkins is postmaster. Salary, $3 per annum;
perquisites, a ball of twine.
A little child of Mrs. Hurtbauer, of Lansing, accidentally
set fire to her clothes at the kitchen stove last Friday, during her mother's
absence, and was burned to death.
Miss Leonard, the lady preacher, who has been conducting
revival services in Lansing, has gone to Waukon. Over one hundred conversions
have taken place under her ministry at Lansing.
Mr. Cleasby, of Jones county, fired a gun last week, and the
weapon went off "left in front," the breech pin passing through his
hat and raising his scalp. He has lot all confidence in his fire-arms.
George Paddington, of Waubeck, aged seventy years, walked to
Marion, a distance of seventeen miles, the other day, before breakfast. But he
didn't eat breakfast until about four o'clock in the afternoon.
The Muscatine Journal publicly says Mr. Fry, superintendent
of the county poor of that county, is "eleemosynary." Mr. Fry will of
course bring action for libel, and recover damages.
