- The Old Settlers of Scott county held a reunion in Davenport on the evening of
the 22d. The annual address was delivered by A. Sanders, senior editor of
the Gazette.
- The Toledo Transcript says that Mr. Klingnman, who was bound over for
manslaughter in the Bunker affair in the sum of $5,000 to appear at the present
term of Court, was not to be found. He undoubtedly thought that the
sacrifice of one half of his property was easier than a close confinement or
pulling hemp.
- The Cedar Rapids Times of the 23d says that the Indians have recently buried a
little child at their encampment; which is some two miles up the river. At
the head of the grave are carefully deposited the child's toys and
"playthings". The Times exclaims: "What a lesson of faith,
touching in its confiding simplicity, is here taught even to a race boastful of
a higher faith and a prouder civilization."
- The river is clear of ice as far north as Dubuque. The ferry boat made
her first trip Monday last at that place.
- The North Iowa (McGregor) Times announces that the McGregor application for a
Branch of the State Bank of Iowa has been successful. "Mr. Noble, who
has just returned from a meeting of the State Board of Directors, informs us
that the vote by which the application was granted was a unanimous one."
The Bank will go into operation as soon as the office is completed; books
procured; &c., &c, probably by the 10th of April. E.V. Carter,

- The Marengo Visitor of the 22d, says that a monster American Bald Eagle was
shot one day last week, by Dewitt Sturdevant, near that place weighing upwards
of fourteen pounds, and measuring seven feet three inches from tip to tip of his
wings; and three feet from his beak to the end of his tail. This was a
very rare specimen.
- The county seat war in Clayton county is about to be renewed. The
contest this time is between Garnavillo and Elkader.
