April 3d, near Natches, Miss., at
the residence of V. Metcalf, LOUISA M. ROPER, daughter of the
late Judge Roper of Ky. She had been for 4 years a consistent
member of the Presbyterian Church.- She was the kindest and best
of sisters- a warm and sincere friend. To know her was to lover
her. Long will her loss be felt by her many friends. Her disease
was hemorrhage of the Lungs. A.S.H.

In this city on the evening of the 27th June, Mrs. ANNA GRAHAM, aged 85 years. She was from Trumbund, county of Derry, Ireland. She embraced the christian religion in her youth and continued to be a consistent follower of Christ till the hour of her death. "Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord."-Comm.
On the 26th June, near Burlington, Mrs. ELIZA B. ARNOLD, consort of Rodney Arnold, aged 44 years.

A CARD- We (having had
occasion to partake of the hospitalities of Mr. Stripe of the
Eagle Hotel, Fort Madison, Iowa) would recommend his house to all
visiting that town as being a very pleasant, convenient and
agreeable house. To the gentlemanly officers of the fine steamer
Oswego and Mr. Stripe of the Eagle Hotel, we tender our thanks
for the favors received at their hands, and recommend them to the
traveling community as being worthy of their patronage.

The Fourth -- Owing to the fear of excess as an
introduction to the Cholera, our citizens made very little public
demonstration of patriotism yesterday. We had an invitation
to attend the South Burlington Sunday School celebration at 8
o'clock in the morning, but owing to our business engagements, we
could not attend. However, we understand that the
celebration went off admirably. The Declaration was read,
and interesting speeches were made by Messrs. E.W. Gray, Charles
Hendrie and H.B. Ware. About 10 o'clock the Cadets of
Temperance, preceded by the Burlington Temperance Brass Band,
came out of their Hall and marched to the Methodist Church, where
two of their members -- Masters Littleton and Houseworth -- made
interesting addresses. After marching back to the Hall in
the same order, they adjourned.
Keokuk -- The Cholera is very bad in Keokuk. It is reported
that ten persons died there on Sunday last. This must be a
mistake. We have a letter from there dated Monday. It
says that there were eight cases on the day previous, and that by
using the sulphur remedy only two of these died, and they under
Thompsonian treatment. The sulphur, the letter states, was
first used on a Mr. Jones, who was in a collapsed state. By
giving him a pill of 4 grains sulphur and one of Charcoal every
15 minutes for two hours, he recovered.
