Samuel V. Benton Dies at Lincoln, Nebraska, Thursday
Samuel V. Benton, 94, pioneer of Clay and Dickinson counties, died Thursday
evening, December 8, at 8:30 o'clock at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Mary
E. Ewing, in Lincoln, Neb., where he had resided the past ten years. The
deceased was the grandfather of Mrs. N. C. Rindsig, Mrs. D. R. Markle, G. P.
Gloyd, Jr., and A. E. Gloyd, all of Spencer.
Funeral services were held Sunday morning at 9 o'clock at the Jones Funeral
Home in Spencer with the Rev. B. J. Trickery, pastor of the First
Congregational church, in charge. Rev. Trickey used the text "Thou shalt
come to the grave in full age, Like as a shock of grain cometh in its
season." Miss Miriam Evans of this city sang "Rock of Ages" and "City Four
Square." Interment was made in Riverside cemetery where Mrs. Benson lays at rest.
Samuel V. Benton was born at Bristol, Elkhart County, Ind., November 21,
1838, the son of Ruby (Seely) and Edward Benton. He was united in marriage
to Rebecca Ellen Blaine at Olney, Ind., in October 1858. Nine children were
born to them, eight of whom are living. A daughter, Mrs. G. P. Gloyd of
Spencer, preceded her father in death.
Mr. Benton and family moved from Indiana to Iowa in 1870 and made their home
on a farm near Terril. In 1900 they moved to North Dakota where he made his
home until ten years ago. Mrs. Benton passed away in 1904 and was buried in
Riverside cemetery [Spencer, Iowa]. He is survived by eight children, 47 grandchildren, 57 great grandchildren,
and 8 great, great grandchildren.
Out of town relatives who attended the funeral were Mrs. Mary Ewing,
daughter and son, John R. Ewing, of Lincoln, Neb., Merton Benton of Shevlin,
Minn., Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Roth and Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Dennis, of Mason
City.
RICHARD HANSEN
Funeral services were held at St. Joseph, Mo., Tuesday morning at 10 o'clock
for Richard Albin, son of Mr. and Mrs. Christie Hansen, who died shortly
after birth Sunday, December 11. The little child was a grandchild of Mr.
and Mrs. Chris Hansen of Spencer.
Funeral Services Here Sunday for Royal Resident
Mrs. Louisa Miller, resident of Clay county the past 37 years, died at the
home of her son, Roy Miller at Royal Friday morning, December 9, at the age
of 75 years and 9 months. Rev. F. W. Wilson of Spencer, retired minister of the Methodist church,
conducted the funeral services which were held Sunday afternoon at one
o'clock at the Cobb-Phelps Funeral Home in Spencer. Sons and other relatives of the deceased served as pall bearers. Interment
was made in the Okoboji cemetery at Arnolds Park.
Louisa Rahn was born in Lima township, Carroll county, Ill., on March 9,
1857. She was united in marriage January 31, 1878, to Lewis S. Miller and
they resided in Carroll county, Ill., until March 1895, when they moved to
Clay county where she has since lived. To this union five children were born, all of whom survive. They are Roy of
Royal, Charles C. of Freeport, Ill., Mrs. Lottie Bowen of Storm Lake, Mrs.
Bertha Fulton of Peterson, Mrs. Pearl Olmsted of Durant, and thirteen
grandchildren, one brother, a sister, a half brother and half sister
survive.
When about 35 years of age, Mrs. Miller joined the Evangelical church at
Maple Grove, Ill., of which she was a member until moving to Iowa. On March
11, 1915, she transferred her church affiliations to the Methodist Episcopal
church of Peterson, of which she was a faithful member until her death.
