TEAM RUNS AWAY DRIVER UNINJURED
Sunday at noon a team hitched to a wagon containing a scissor
grinders outfit, a sort of house on wheels used by Mr. Joe Adams
in traveling all over the country, started from the south side of
the square and running hard went east to the southeast corner
where they turned north so abruptly that one of the horses was
thrown on its knees and received a severe wound on each fore leg
and finally with the assistance of some men who happened on the
scene the team came to a stop. Mr. Will Coon was in the rig at
the time but was not hurt. It was a lucky turn that saved both
wagon and driver from serious injury.
CLARKE COUNTY MEN IN COLORADO - Center,
Colorado, Sept 12th, 1908.
The Democrat, Osceola, Iowa
Dear Sir: We arrived in this San Luis Valley day before
yesterday, and have seen a fine country where the people are all
well satisfied to live and we find the reason for that, is
because they are all making money easy, and rising fine grain.
Farming in this country is different from Iowa. The farmer plants
his grain then Irrigates it, then goes fishing. We are all
pleased with this country and it has not been exagerated to us.
We are all glad we made this trip and to see this scenery and the
beautiful mountains is worth the expense of the trip. We have
been told some big stories about what the farmers can do. But
they have been able to prove everything to us so we have to
believe them. This is positively the greatest country we ever saw
for the money and we have seen thousands of acres of oats that
will make 50 to 60 bushels to the acre, and thousands of acres of
wheat that will make from 40 to 50 bushels, we thought you would
like to tell the people of our trup and we can brag on the San
Luis Valley, Colorado.
Your Very Respectfully,
H. D. Hardenburg
H. K. Fortney

Obituary. John W. Kelley was born near
Rochester, New York September 8th, 1831, and died at his home in
Mason City September 10th, 1908 at the age of 77 years and two
days. Mr. Kelley married Miss Sara Raymond at Ypsilanti, Michigan
in 1866, came to Eddyville soon after, where he remained only a
short time, removing from there to Monroe, Iowa and from there to
Osceola in 1870. In 1892 he moved his family to Huron, South
Dakota but for the last five years has resided at Mason City,
Iowa. While in Osceola Mr. Kelley was engaged in the milling,
hardware and lumber business. He was an upright, Christian
gentleman and a member and elder of the Presbyterian church.
Absolute honesty and a gently disposition made for Mr. Kelley a
large number of sincere friends. The companions of various epochs
of his life realize that in the loss of this man they lose one
who cannot be replaced no work torn down. Sincerity of purpose
had much to do with the success of this man. A wife and two
children, Fred of Huron, South Dakota, and Elmer of Mason City,
Iowa, survive the deceased. The remains were brought to Osceola
Saturday. Short funeral services were held at the grave, Saturday
afternoon at 3 o'clock. Rev. E.O. Rogers officiating. Interment
took place at the Maple Hill cemetery.
Died. Esther Daniels Lewis died in Oseola at the
home of her sister Mrs. Mary Simmons at 11:00a.m. Tuesday Sept.
15th, 1908 aged eighty three years. Deceased was born in Ohio,
July 20th, 1825. The funeral is to be held at the house this
Thursday at 2:00 p.m. and the body shipped to State Center, Iowa
for burial

an exchange. The plan is this, prepare a circular board

convenient to all, have the name of each member of the family
engraved, printed or painted on a separate place of the board for
the exclusive purpose of leaving their gum between chews. This
will eliminate the row of chews under the bed stead and on the
underside of the dining room chairs. The gum trust may kick but
theres no getting around it, the saving will be great and there
will be less danger of some one taking your fresh chew and
substituting an old one.
