Chariton Herald: Through the efforts of Col. HEPBURN, senator Jas. H. JAMISON of Osceola has been selected for the permanent receivership of the First National Bank of this city. H.M. BOSTWICK, who was a national bank examiner before the failure here, was placed in charge as temporary receiver and has conducted the business of the closed bank in an eminently fair, just and business-like manner ... he and his family will return home to Woodbine ... Senator JAMISON & wife will move here soon ... Mrs. JAMISON was formerly Miss Margaret ROBBINS of this city [Chariton] ... and sister of Deputy Sheriff George ROBBINS.

Osceola Public Library.
A meeting was held Friday night and articles of incorporation were drawn up and a board of trustees chosen:

Adamosa Visit.
Sheriff KEERAN returned last week from Adamosa, where he went with a prisoner. While there he saw John LIKENS, sent up about 12 years ago for murder. LIKENS knew him and asked about many people he had known in Clarke county. The Sheriff also saw Mat HUNTER who was out with a squad of insane prisoners for their daily exercise. He had a conversation with him.

Deaths.

--Isaac WALLACE died at his home near Smyrna, February 29, from the effects of a recent stroke of paralysis. Mr. WALLACE was a pioneer of this county, having lived at the old home something over twenty years. The children were all home at the time of his death. His wife preceded him to the better world about five years ago. He was a little over seventy years of age and had collected a host of friends to his lifetime. Burial took place Monday.

--William PADGETT died at his home March 4th. He leaves two children Maggie and John. He was a member of the sixth Iowa infantry company F. He was well known and highly respected and leaves many friends to mourn his loss. The funeral will be held from the house Thursday, conducted by Rev. Wyman FOLGER. Interment will be made in Union cemetery.

--Mrs. Elizabeth M. ABERNATHY, wife of George ABERNATHY, died at her home in Murray March 8, 1908, aged 76 years. She was one of the early settlers of Clarke county. Rev. Allen A. THOMPSON conducted the funeral services at the home Tuesday morning at 11 o'clock.

--Jay: This community was greatly shocked on last Saturday evening to hear of the death of Mrs. Harry RUBLE, only child of Mr. and Mrs. Chas HARRIS of Lucas county, after an illness of about 2 weeks from peritonetis. She was married to Harry RUBLE December 29, 1907 and departed this life at the home of her parents March 7, 1908 about 7 o'clock. After short funeral services at the house by Rev. DORRELL Monday afternoon the remains were taken to Osceola by relatives and friends where Tuesday afternoon interment took place in the cemetery there. The husband and parents have the deepest and sincerest sympathy of this community.

-Addison BOWLESBY was prostrated by a stoke of paralysis at his home north of Osceola. He is gradually recovering.
-Miss DAMARIN, the new trimmer for Lillian CORWIN has arrived.
-Mr. and Mrs. Homer MONGAR are the proud parents of a bright little daughter, born Wednesday morning.
-Born to Mr. and Mrs. Dell BINKERD, on March 2nd, a little daughter. Mrs. BINKERD was formerly Edna BAUGHMAN, of this city.
-Rev. A.Q. GARRETT has launched a new enterprise and industry in Osceola in the shape of a Rug and Carpet factory.
-Frank MANLEY returned to Texas on Tuesday.
-Rev. A.Q. GARRETT, O.M. SLAYMAKER & Wib BOOTH were in Des Moines and Frank BARNHILL was in Weldon on business this week.
-Dr. WAIGHT of Leon visited at the home of his daughter Mrs. J.C. ATZ.
-John BRAND, of Knox twp., accompanied by his cousin Charles DEVAULT, of Franklin co. Ohio, were in Osceola. This is Mr. DEVAULT's first visit to Iowa.
-Henry ROSS left for Wingate, Indiana to visit his father. He was accompanied by his cousins Cecil & Raymond BOZE of Wingate, who have been visiting here.
-H.M. INGHRAM visited his daughter Grace LEWIS at Harlan, Ia.
-Charles STATHAM former proprietor of the Fair Store left for his home in Afton. J.E. JOHNSON, the new proprietor of the Fair Store has rented a house and will move his wife & son from Creston to Osceola.
-County treasurer Sid BATES attended the funeral of his uncle Gilbert BATES in Hopeville.
-Grace LEWIS left for Denver where she will join her husband and make their home there.
-Frank SHERER is in ill health at the home of his son-in-law Charles SHERROW, near Lacelle.
-J.M. CLEVENGER left for Kansas City to visit his son Marvin.
-Mr. and Mrs. John EWING from Des Moines have rented the LEESON farm 5 miles SW of town, and will live there.
-Walter KIDDOO, who was severely injured by being struck by a railroad train a couple weeks ago is improving, but he is not yet able to leave his home.
-Fred HOFFMAN returned from Texas. He is pleased with the country and is considering removing to that part of the country.
-Rowe LEWIS, who is attending Elliots Business College in Burlington, arrived in Osceola for a visit with friends.
-Miss Bessie KEEVES, our reporter, has been detained at her home with an attack of the la grippe, for the past few days.
-Dr. LANDIS and wife left for their farm in Knox twp. where they will reside for at least a year. They purchased the farm from the late Abe C. RARICK.
-Ellsworth HUNT has purchased a farm of 120 acres NW of Osceola of Mr. FARLEY and has taken possession. Mr. HUNT has farmed successfully as a renter of the CANDEE farm in Knox township, several years and now buys a place of his own. It is reported the price paid was $55 per acre.

-Mrs. Abe ALLISON of Thayer spent several days caring for Grandma McCLEERY, who has been very sick.
-D.O. DUFUR, W.H. ROBERTS were re-elected Schoold Directors and Miss Mattie MARTINDALE as treasurer.
-Chas. EDEN is a very sick man.

Madison.
-Mrs. NELDT is still on the sick list.
-Mr. George SMULL and Miss Flora HOLLAND were married at Winterset last week.

Washington.
-J. KELLEY has moved into the farm he purchased of Mr. MARIAR last fall and Harvey WOODS occupies Mr. KELLEY's farm here.
-Messrs NEFF, SMITH, HAMOND & BIERMA were elected School directors for No. 1,2,3 & 4.
-William WINTER received for a birthday present a pony, to drive with the one he already has.
-Chas. NEFF has moved into the Arthur JENKS farm.

Hopeville.
-B.F. GAUMER & John KATZENBERGER were elected School directors.
-Our good mail carrier Mr. ABERNATHY has been detained at home by the sickness and death of his mother.
-Fred BEAMAN's infant child is very sick and Marvin BIVENS is sick with typhoid fever.
-John RIES has sold his farm to Al MUSSLEMAN.

Jay.
-Moving is about over, S.A. WEAKLEND has moved to Lucas county on the William MORAN place; Hal ARNOLD moved on the Wm. MANLY farm; Perry BURRELL moved to Lucas near the Hazel Dell school house; Gillette WEAKLEND is on his fathers place, Floyd EVASIS on the YOUNG place which he has purchased and Pearl WILKINSON will soon have his house ready to move into.
-Warren SMITH and Dave ARNOLD were elected School directors at No. 6 and No. 1, respectively.

Declamatory Contest.
The contest at Afton was well attended by Osceola people. Dan McDONOUGH represented the Osceola High School, in the contest of 12 schools. Those attending from Osceola were:

Two Wills Opened.
Wills of deceased Clarke co. citizens have been opened, read & filed to await action in Probate court:
-Will of Isaac WALLACE late of Franklin township, dated August 11, 1905, witnessed by C.E. BADLEY & C.T. NEWELL. All household furniture to his 3 daughters, to be divided as they can agree; the remainder of his property, real & personal, is to be divided equally among his 8 children
-Will of William PADGETT late of Osceola township, dated August 1, 1905, A.D. SIMMONS named exe. All debts to be paid first, then $500 cash to be paid to his son JohnPADGETT. The remainder of the estate, real & personal, was left to his widow Mahala PADGETT for life, and after her death, to his son John. "Having given to my daughter, Margaret WATTS, in my lifetime what I consider a fair and proper share of my property ... she will take nothing of my estate..."

Obituaries.

-Died at his home in VanBuren county, Iowa, March 2nd, 1908 John P. ROUNKLES, father of Mrs. E.R. TRASHER of Liberty twp, Clarke county. The deceased was a successful farmer of VanBuren county, has always lived an honest and up right life before his fellow men and was esteemed by all who knew him. Having lived in the same vicinity fifty-two years. He passed away at the ripe old age of eighty-three years two months and twenty-five days. One by one they are gathered home.

-Mrs. Emma Harris RUBLE died at her home in Lucas county, March 7th, 1908 at the age of 18 years, 8 months and 17 days. Mrs. RUBLE was the granddaughter of our townsman Mr. Ed EHRHARDT. The funeral was held at he Presbyterian church in Osceola March 10th.

-Another pioneer and old soldier has been summoned to his long home in the person of Wm. PADGETT who died at his home 3 miles north of Osceola, Wednesday morning, March 4, 1908. Mr. PADGETT was born in Green county, Indiana, August 15, 1838 and at the time of his death was 69 years 6 months and 18 days old. He was the only son of Owen and Elizabeth (Dyer) PADGETT, both deceased; having an only sister Mary E. FRITS of Terre Haute, Indiana. His mother died when he was quite a young boy and he started out in the world to battle for himself, from which time he had shared its sunshine and its clouds. He came to Clarke county in 1858 when most of this country was a bleak prairie and has been a continuous resident since, except four years spent in the maintainance of the Union, enlisting in Co. F, 6th Iowa. He was a faithful and valient soldier and while participating in the "Battle of Shiloh" received a gun shot in the shoulder and arm from which wound he was so disabled, he could not again carry a gun, but rendered equally as good service in other duties assigned him. He was one of Sherman's men in the "Famous March to the Sea" ... After returning from the war in 1895 (sic) he engaged in farming and stock raising ... He was married March 1868 to Sarah A. FARLEY who died Dec. 9, 1879 leaving him two small children ... The following year he married Mahaba (sic) YOUNG ... His son John of Des Moines was with him in his last sickness, his daughter Margaret WATTS, of Lakeman, Mo., not being present ... Funeral services were held at the late home on Thursday ... burial in Union Chapel cemetery.

-Mary C. Lukenbill McNICHOLS was born in Clarke county, Iowa August 3, 1855 and died at the home of Julius GOLDSMITH in Osceola, Saturday March 7, 1908 aged 52 years 7 months and 4 days. She has lived in the family of Mr. GOLDSMITH for 11 years. She united with the christian church under the ministry of Rev. NORTHCUT and has been a faithful, consistent member. She was a member of the Relief Corps. She leaves 2 brothers and 1 sister.

-John S. THOMPSON was born in Ohio Dec. 10, 1844 and died in Osceola March 5, 1908, at the age of 63 years, 2 months and 25 days. He was of a family of fourteen children. He enlisted in the 12th Ohio Heavy Artillery and served through the war. He was married in 1868 to Miss Serena C. WILLIAMS to whom one daughter now living in Des Moines was born. He came to Iowa many years ago and his wife died Nov. 23, 1887. He united with the Christian church March 10, 1898. On Dec. 3, 1898 he married Miss Mary C. RUSH who survives him. The funeral was conducted from his home by O.M. PENNOCK of the Christian church on Friday March 6, 1908.

-Mrs. Allie J. KLECKNER, wife of Henry KLECKNER, died at her home in northeast Osceola on Monday March 9, at 9 o'clock a.m. at the age of 63 years and one month. Mrs. KLECKNER had been in very poor health most of the winter. The remains were taken to New Virginia where the services were held from the M.E. church on March 11. The Relief Corps of which the deceased was a member, accompanied the remains to New Virginia.

Local News.

-Mr. M.T. SHELTON who has lately purchased the J.A. DENLY property in southeast Osceola was trimming the tall maple trees in his yard and fell from one of them and broke his back. We hope he is not hurt so badly as reported.
-Last Tuesday was so fine a day that Blair REITZEL could not resist the temptation and he went into his garden and planted a head of lettuce.
-Mrs. Rose BRADLEY invited in several little boys and girls on Tuesday to help Louise celebrate her 5th birthday.
-Public sale of native Lumber, all lengths and sizes, 8 miles from Osceola, Thursday March 12. W.A. CRIST.
-Miss Codi M. CASADY offers her services as a graduate nurse to the people of Osceola and vicinity.
