Suicide by Poison.
Last Saturday Ida Danna KLEINBECK, the young wife of Edward
KLEINBECK, living north of Murray, ended her life by taking a
dose of strychnine. She was a native of New York and married only
last April. Since that time they have made their home with her
husband's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jacob KLEINBECK. The relations of
husband & wife were entirely cordial and happy and no
adequate motive for her rash act could be found other than
existed in her own imagination. She was about 25 years of age and
regarded in every way as an excellent woman & wife.

Fatal Accident.
On last thursday at the home of Mr. William LOOMIS in Washington
twp. several boys were shooting at a target with a repeating 22
cal. rifle. A daughter of Mr. LOOMIS was standing on the porch
when Willie GREEN handed her the rifle, offering her the butt of
the gun and he, holding the barrel. As she seized the gun, her
finger struck the trigger and it was discharged squarely into the
abdomen of the boy. Everything was done that the skill of
physicians could suggest, but after suffering much, the young man
died on Tuesday afternoon. Willie GREEN was the son of J.W. GREEN
and was about 18 years of age. He was visiting at the home of Mr.
LOOMIS. [abtracted from full article]
Father of Prominent Osceola Man Dies by his Own Hands in
Illinois.
Belleville, Ill; Jan. 2 -- Charles BECKER, 67, former state
treasurer of Illinois, committed suicide at his home in
Belleville, by shooting himself in the mouth. The suicide
followed a family conference attended by 3 of his 4 children. It
is said by friends that differences between him and his children
over the disposition of his property, following his recent second
marriage, may have been responsible for his sudden decision to
end his life. The eldest son, Casimir BECKER of Osceola, was not
at the family conference. Mr. BECKER was one of Belleville's
richest citizens & leaves an estate est. to be worth $400,000
to $500,000. [abtracted from a long article]

Amanda B. ANDERSON was adjudged mentally unbalanced & she was
taken to the hospital at Clarinda for treatment. She is the wife
of Frank ANDERSON, a Swedish gentleman residing north of
Chariton, 43 yrs of age and mother of small children. By hard
work & frugality they had secured a small farm and saved up
money sufficient to build a new house, but like may others their
funds had been placed in the 1st National Bank for safe keeping
and they lost it. Worry over this was the principle cause of her
dethroned reason. There surely is pathos in this and justice
cries out against such wrong. [abtracted from full article]

Struck By Train.
Frank Prine Killed & T.W. Carson in Critical
Condition.
Sunday morning the sad news of a terrible accident
reached us. About 11 o'clock p.m. Saturday night Frank PRINE and
T.W. CARSON were returning to the PAUL farm east of here and to
save time they were walking down the railroad track. When near
the elevator they heard the approach of a freight train on one
track and inorder to evade it stepped on the adjoining track and
the Fast mail Train No. 8 on the Burlington struck them, killing
Frank PRINE and throwing CARSON many feet and injuring him
internally as well as externally. The body of PRINE was removed
to the undertaking establishment of T.B. WEBSTER & SMITH, and
CARSON was taken to the Commercial Hotel where the best medical
aid and attention is being given him, and although he is in a
critical condition it is thought he will recover in time. PRINE
was employed on the PAUL farm and CARSON had been at that place
for supper Saturday. CARSON is about 25 years old & PRINE was
about 21, the nephew of Cashier C.A. TWYFORD of the Osceola
National Bank. The funeral was held here Monday. [extracted from

Clarke County Poor Farm.
The editor of the Democrat spent an interesting day at the County
Poor Farm Thursday of last week, on the occasion of the
inspection of the premises and property by the Board of
Supervisors. The county farm consists of a square tract of 160
acres of beautiful land about 3 miles NE of Osceola, in Osceola
twp. adjoining the Fremont line. For the past 14 years it has
been under the management of superintendent MILLER and his wife
who live on the premises. In one wing (of the house) Mr. and Mrs.
MILLER have their living apartment. There are accommadations in
the pauper wards for 18 or 20 persons, but at present there are
but 8 inmates, 4 women and 4 men. the men's quarters are in a
frame building slightly removed from the main house. Probably the
most interesting character among the inmates at the Poor Farm is
the venerable James Madison WALTERS, who has made his home there
for the past 5 years. Mr. WALTERS is now 88 years old, is tall,
erect, and vigorous in body and intellect. His history is an
interesting one ... [unfortunately the next 2 lines were
completely illegible]... of fortune. In portions of his life he
has had wealth, friends, political influence and official rank
and prestige, yet he is spending his declining years in the poor
house, waiting for the grim reaper. Sixty-five years ago Mr.
WALTERS settled on land in Marion county, Iowa, which he secured
from the government... [he was] the first Justice of the Peace,
and when Marion county was organized, he was elected the first
Sheriff & served 2 terms... afterward he was postmaster at
Knoxville... served 2 terms as representative in the legislature
from Marion county ... and pursued a varied business life, having
considerable wealth. In later years he came to Clarke county
living near Murray. One evening 5 years ago he came walking to
the poor house and asked for admission.... The success of no
man's life can be accurately measured until its close.
Close Call.
Quite a crowd were skating on the grade pond last Sunday
afternoon. there are several large air holes, one extending
almost to the center of the pond. Little Monroe LINGLE, the 11
year old son of William LINGLE was not thinking how close he was
to the air hole, he slipped and fell in. The boys quickly
gathered around him and Johnnie TARLTON was the heroic little lad
that reached down and pulled him out. Luckily help came
immediately for he was so chilled from the cold ice water that he
could hardly swim to the water's edge to get out. We already know
of the horrible death of little Ernest LASH at this same pond.
