Maurice - Fire starting in a moving picture theater over the
Woodna & Marelas restaurant Sunday morning wiped out a large
section of business buildings in Maurice and caused a loss
estimated at $25,000. The fire raged until the frame buildings
adjacent to its origin were a mass of smoking ruins. Buildings
totally destroyed are: Barber shop and pool hall, owned by Joe
Douglas. Heuinkveld Mercantile company. Garage owned by P.J.
Moran. Restaurant and moving picture show building, owned by Mrs.
Ellen Lynch. It is assumed that the fire was caused by some of
the apparatus in the moving picture show, although there is now
way of telling, as the show was closed about 11 o'clock and no
one was in the place at the time.
Estherville - W.J. Pullen of Estherville, was appointed to the
position of deputy state fish and game warden with a salary of
$1,200 per year. Mr. Pullen served as sheriff of Emmet county for
several years, being classed as a very efficient officer. At
present he is acting in the capacity of city assessor.
Avoca - According to a jury in Judge Woodruff's court at Avoca,
it is worth $2,500 to be accused of stealing a steer. Alex Cain,
the man who was accused of being a steer stealer, thought it was
worth all of $10,000 and sued his neighbor J.K. Osler for that
amount. But the jury, after hearing the suit for three days and
then wrestling over the complex problems presented for better
than 18 hours, concluded he had fixed his estimate too high, and
reduced that amount to $2,500.
- After 52 years of married life, Louise M. Dettmer of Waterloo
has brought action against Henry W. Dettmer for separate
maintenance. She is 70 years old and he is 78. For two years the
couple has been separated.
