HERE AND THERE
- The only child of Dr. and Mrs. Ryder, of Lawler, a bright
little boy, was poisoned one day last week by eating some
quinine.
- Frank E. Bender, who on August 24, 1901 received a heavy timber
through the left side of his body in a wreck at Fort Dodge, has
entirely recovered from his terrible injuries, and has recently
accepted a position as engineer on the Chicago Great Western
running between Clarion and Oelwein.
- Mrs. Alonza Beard, of Villisca, became angry because her
husband had a jug of alcohol, and broke it over a hot stove. The
alcohol ignited, setting fire to the room. A gasoline tank
exploded, the woman was burned to death and the husband was badly
burned on the hands and face in attempting to save his wife. The
couple's one-year-old infant was badly burned. The woman's flesh
fell from her bones. She lived seven hours in great agony.
- Roscoe Sewell was released from the Anamosa penitentiary on
April 23 on parole granted by Gov. Cummins. The young man was
convicted of the crime of rape at the November 1900, term of the
Bremer county district court and the court sentenced him to eight
years of hard labor in the penitentiary. His parole is
conditional on good behavior. He is required to be a good
citizen, to remain a resident of Butler county, to abstain from
the uses of alcoholic beverages and to not frequent places where
liquor is sold, during the term of his parole, to spend his
evenings at home and to make a report of his residence,
occupation, etc., once a month to the governor. - Waverly
Republican.
- Oscar Mullen, of Eagle township, was severely injured about
noon Thursday while assisting in sawing wood with a buzz saw at
the home of P.J. McGarvey in Eagle township. Mr. Mullen was
engaged in carrying wood to the saw, and just before the noon
hour a big stick was got in position to be cut, and when the saw
started to go through it, it broke and one of the pieces struck
him in the face, hitting him just below the lower lip and cutting
a gash from one side of the chin to the other and severing a
piece of the lower jaw bone. He was at once brought to La Porte
City and taken to the office of Dr. G.W. Fisher where his
injuries were attended to. Although the injury is a very serious
one it is hoped by Mr. Mullen's many friends that he will
speedily recover. - LaPorte Progress Review.
