THE STATE CAPITAL
Des Moines Chat.
The State board of control has been making some experiments to
determine the cost of feeding the inmates of different State
institutions. The uniform dietary has been established so far as
possible and for the week ending July 2 the institutions were all
instructed to use the same menu, so far as possible. It is
manifestly impossible to serve the same ration to the children at
the Davenport home that is provided for the convicts in the
penitentiaries, employed at hard work. Different amounts of meat
must be provided, making the expense
higher in the penitentiaries and insane asylums, and in various
other ways the menu must be changed to adapt it to the needs of
different classes of institutions. But so far as possible the
menu was made uniform for the institutions, and the cost was
calculated with the utmost care, per capita, by the week, day and
meal. The results follow, giving the average cost per person per
meal: Anamosa, .057; Clarinda, .0479; Council Bluffs, .03825;
Davenport, .0255; Eldora, .05; Fort Madison, .0367; Glenwood,
.047; Independence, .036;
Knoxville, .0533; Marshalltown, .049; Mitchelville, .043; Mt.
Pleasant, .0357; Vinton, .0522-27.
