HANCE - At her home in Chickasaw township in
this county. March 30th 1899. Mrs. Caroline Hance in the 90th
year of her age. Caroline DeWitt, was born in Cayuga county,
N.Y., June 26th, 1809 and came west to Ohio in 1818, there she
became the wife of Isaac Hance Sept. 13th, 1830. They moved from
there to Illinois in 1835 and thence to Iowa in 1856, settling in
this county where they have resided until called to pass to the
land of rest and sunshine on the other side. She was the mother
of eleven children six of whom preceded her to the better land.
She was a christian lady, a member of the M.E. church for more
than sixty years. Although of extreme old age she had not
outlived her usefulness but was one to whom the young might go to
for council and from her rich stores of christian experience she
found words and illustrations to cheer and comfort those in doubt
and despondency. Truly a mother in Israel has fallen and many
have reason to remember this estimable christian woman. The
funeral was held Saturday, April 1, 1899, conducted by the Rev.
McCleery, and all that was mortal of this servant of God was laid
to rest to await the summons of Him who said: 'I am the
resurrection and the life."
