Classified Group Holds Meeting

Sailor Tells of U. S. O. Value

Representatives from 167 firms and institutions in Council Bluffs attended the dinner meeting of the classified section of the war chest Thursday night at the Chieftain. These volunteers from the larger firms divisions represent 90 per cent of the gainfully employed of the city.

Chairman Ira Hays introduced the speakers, Pharmacist’s Mate 3/c Jack Schlemmer speaking of the part of the USO plays in the life of the serviceman away from home, praised the organization highly, saying that it fills a need no other organization can supply.

In answer to many questions concerning the contingent fund noted on the national war fund budget, E. L. Allphin said: “This fund needs to be explained to many, this amount has been set aside nationally to take care of the emergencies which will arise as we begin occupation of the countries we will move into with the various agencies already being set up for such purposes.”

Boyd Mort, co-chairman in charge of solicitation for the Northwest Bell company, explained the setup for this large group and said that the company was willing to give them all the time needed for presenting the appeal to their personnel. Co-worker Gil Rogers of the Bell company said: “Our company has felt for some time that this matter of a joint solicitation is a very sensible approach to the question of raising community funds we are out to do our part in putting Council Bluffs’ War Chest campaign across.”
