IN TANK DESTROYER UNIT

~Cpl. Martin Shinn has written to his sister, Mrs. Harry Dolter, 513 Jackson avenue northwest, that he is now in Africa with a tank destroyer battalion.  Corporal Shinn has a brother, Pfc. George Shinn, now taking training at Fort Lewis, Wash.

Pvt. Otto H. Grelk, Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. O. H. Grelk, 730 Carolina avenue northeast, has recently been graduated from an intensive course in aviation mechanics at Sheppard field, Tex.

A new representative from the Mason City community has joined the forces of the U. S. Navy getting boot training at Camp Farragut, Idaho.  He is Harold James Cutler, son of Mr. and Mrs. Julius N. Cutler, 23 Oak drive.

The three brothers of Mrs. Jack Fitzgerald of Rockwell are now in the service of the country.  They are Francis, Emmet and Richard Meehan. Pvt. Richard Meehan entered the army in December, 1941, and is stationed at Camp Carson, Colo., with an engineer’s unit.  Pvt. Francis Meehan was the next to leave in March, 1942.  He was sent to Camp Roberts, Cal., where he is with a quartermaster’s outfit. Pvt. Emmet Meehan entered service with the signal corps in January, 1943, and is at Camp Howzee, Tex.

Donning the Navy blue at the training station at Farragut, Idaho, is Dale Vernon Faulken, son of Mr. and Mrs. C. W. Faulken.

Sgt. A. Gilbert Dusheck, son of Mr. and Mrs. John F. Dusheck, 834 Eighth street northeast, has been made sergeant major in charge of the pay roll at the Army installation at Grand Rapids, Mich.  Sergeant Dusheck enlisted in May, 1942.  Jewell R. Dusheck is now a private first class at Camp Sibert, Ala.  He is pay roll clerk.  Private Dusheck entered the service on Jan. 19, 1943.

Aviation Cadet Donald G. Stubbs, son of Mr. and Mrs. Glenn Stubbs, 1604 Delaware avenue southeast, has entered the Army air forces pre-flight school at Selman Field, La.  He will be a navigator.

Pvt. Dale W. Sanders, son of Mr. and Mrs. William Sanders, 808 Delaware avenue northeast, has been transferred from Camp Young, Indio, Cal., to San Bernardino, Cal.  He is in the quartermaster corps, refrigeration company.

Pvt. Clinton Gardinier, son of Mr. and Mrs. Earl Gardinier, 7 Twenty-second street southeast has been promoted to the rank of corporal technician at Lincoln air base in Nebraska. He has been in the service since September, 1942. 

Technical Cpl. Donald J. Schultz, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Schultz, Route 1, has been enrolled in a special course of instruction at the signal corps school at Camp Murphy, Fla.

Paul E. Hammond, son of Mrs. Nick Kaloplastos, 718 Van Buren avenue southwest has been promoted from the rank of sergeant to staff sergeant.  He has been visiting in Mason City for the past few days and returned to the army air base at Sioux City.

Leslie T. Larson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Nels B. Larson, 236 Twenty-first street southeast, received his commission as second lieutenant in the army engineers at Fort Belvoir, Va.  He has been assigned to Camp Claiborne, La., and spent a few hours here enroute there last week.

Soldiers Prisoners on Philippines Isles
WASHINGTON (AP)—Seven Iowans today were listed by the War Department as held by the Japanese as prisoners of war in the Philippines Islands.
They were:
Pvt. John Czako, Mrs. Rose Hansen, sister, Route 3, Iowa Falls;
Pvt. Frank Devivo, Mrs. Mary A. Devivo, mother, 2301 8th ave., Council Bluffs;
Pvt. John F. Diaz, Baldo Diaz, father, Fort Madison;
Pvt. Ray L. Foster, Mrs. Louise Foster, Buffalo;
Pfc. Pierre B. Joice, Mrs. Margaret Joice, mother, West Des Moines;
Pfc. Mathias M. Ruba, Mrs. Lena Ruba, mother, Route 1, LeMars.
