Four Iowans Hold High Positions in U.S. Navy
Washington (AP) - After Jan. 2, the top officer of the navy will
be a native of Iowa, which also has given the navy two of its
present four admirals and two of its rear admirals.
Admiral William D. Leahy, commander of the battle force, who will
advance to the post of chief of naval operations the first of the
year, was born in Hampton, Iowa, May 6, 1875. He was appointed to
the naval academy from Wisconsin in 1893, served on the USS
Oregon in the Spanish-American war, had a wide experience in
command of ships during the World War and was awarded the navy
cross. His home now is in Washington.
Admiral Harry E. Yurnell, a native of Independence, Iowa, became
commander-in-chief of the Asiatic fleet recently, relieving
Admiral Orin G. Murfin at Shanghai, China.
Rear Admiral Arthur St. Clair Smith, born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa,
Dec. 31, 1873, last month became commandant of the twelfth naval
district at San Francisco. He had served as commandant of Mare
Island navy yard since July 3.
Rear Admiral George J. Meyers, born April 10, 1881, in Council
Bluffs, Iowa, has been ordered to sail for the orient Dec. 11 to
take over the job of commandant of the sixteenth naval district,
stationed at Cavite, Philippine Islands.

Osage - Three received final naturalization papers here in
district court before Judge T.A. Beardmore. They are: Jan Kurina,
formerly of Czechoslovakia, now of Osage; Carl Wilhelm Grube,
formerly of Germany, now of Toeterville; Laura Kristiansen,
formerly of Denmark, now of Riceville.
Garner - the body of Mrs. Charles McColgin, the former Miss
Genola Hanson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Hanson, former
residents, was brought here and buried in the family lot beside
the body of her brother, Duane, who was killed recently in an
automobile accident near Denver, Colo. Mrs. McColgin died more
than a year ago in a Denver hospital following an operation for
appendicitis. Mrs. George Hanson accompanied the boy here,
arriving Thursday.
Corwith - Mr. and Mrs. A.C. Buntling, northeast of Corwith, are
the parents of a girl born Thursday morning. The Buntings now
have eleven children, four boys and seven girls.
Oelwein - Ada Ohls, 18, of Oelwein, suffered cuts and bruises
when the automobile in which she was riding was sturck from
behind by a car driven by Charles Levette, a salesman.
