Iowa Cityan Killed in Wreck of Auto
Muscatine, April 3 - George J. Kubik of Iowa City was instantly
killed and his sedan demolished early this morning when his
machine crashed through the north approach to Salisbury bridge
about nine miles northwest of here and fell 25 feet into the
Cedar river.
Stewart to Preside at Dairy Conference
Des Moines, April 3 - Paul P. Stewart, Maynard dairy farmer, will
preside at the regional conference of Iowa and western Ilinois
dairymen here Wednesday and Thursday.

-H.C. Bruns and Frank Mathias of Denver, Bremer county, are in
the city, guests at the home of their uncles, F.C. and H.C.
Hasse.
-Miss McCormick of Garner is a guest at the Arquette home.
-Private William Keeling, late of the Philippine islands, where
he has been serving as a soldier, is in the city for a short
visit and will go to Swaledale for a further visit with
relatives.
Twenty Years Ago:
-John R. Trainer, former resident of Mason City, but now of St.
Paul, was here yesterday looking after business interests.
-Miss Mabel Westfall came here from Delhi last week to resume her
studies and graduate with her class in June.
-Mrs. F.A. Stevens returned last night rom Secogra, Mexico, where
she visited with her daughter.
-John F. Ford, mayor of Fort Dodge, was in the city yesterday and
called on the city commissioners.
Ten Years Ago:
-Dr. Stella Mason will speak at the Methodist church at Charles
City tomorrow evening.
-Fred A. Ontjes, local attorney, today announced his candidacy
for the republican nomination for representative in congress from
the fourth district, opposing G.N. Hangen of Northwood, the
present representative.
-Sam H. Hoyt, son of Mr. and Mrs. S.M. Hoyt, 1225 Twelfth street
northwest, is visiting his parents and friends in the city.
Clear Lake Briefs.
-Mrs. S.E. Eldred and granddaughter, Molly Abbott, left to spend
the week with friends at Goldfield.
-Mr. and Mrs. Lee DeWiggins and son, Richard, Mrs. Eva Butcher
and Mrs. Joe Power left Monday for Greeley, Kans., where they are
to attend the funeral of a sister and daughter, Mrs. Carrie
Wolston of Chicago Tuesday. They will also visit a sister, Mrs.
Edith McClure at Kansas City.
-Mr. and Mrs. W.H. Herriman returned to their hom on South Third
street after spending the winter in St. Cloud, Fla.
-Lyle Malsted, pharmacist at Colgans, spent the weekend at
Hampton with his parents.
-A marriage license has been issued for Ann Considine, 21, and
Joseph R. Glennon, 28, both of Clear Lake.
Masonic Lodge Assists in Kimbell Services
Clear Lake, April 3 - Funeral services for W.H. Kimball were held
Monday afternoon at the M.E. church, with the Rev. B.W. Riner and
Masonic lodge officiating, E.K. Greene acted for the lodge.
Pallbearers were George Knutson, T.E. Sondrol, Herman Knack,
Walter Jensen, Ted Winnie and R.B. Kennedy. A large group of
members of the Eastern Star also attended. Mrs. Faith Monaghan
sang two selections, "Crossing the Bar," and
"Jesus Lover of My Soul."
Ruth Werle Married to Blanchard Finch
Miss Ruth Werle, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Emil G. Werle and
Blanchard R. Finch, son of Ira Finch, all of Manly, were married
at the Olivet parsonage, the Rev. William Galbreth officiating.
They were attended by Miss Marcella Rossiter of Manly and Grant
Burdette Hunt of Plymouth. They will make their home in Manly
where the bridegroom is engaged in operating a garage.
Schroeberl - O'Brien.
Cresco, April 3 - A marriage license has been issue to Frank
Schroeberl, 36, and Marguerite O'Brien, 23, both of near Cresco.
Tobiason - Smith.
Decorah, April 3 - Marion Tobiason, son of Mr. and Mrs. William
Tobiason of Decorah, and Myrtle Eileen Smith, daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. Charles Smith of Lamont, were married by the Rev. Dr. J.P.
Burling at the Congregational parsonage. Attendants were Miss
Vesta Moore and Ralph Holmberg. Immediately following the
ceremony the couple left for Chicago for a short wedding trip,
during which they will attend a beauty convention in the city.
Both Mr. and Mrs. Tobiason are associated with Mrs. William
Tobiason, the bridegroom's mother, in Toby's Beautte Shop. They
will make their home in Decorah.
Eleanor M. Johnson to Wed A. Jorgensen.
Mr. and Mrs. Henry L. Johnson, R.F.D. 5, announce the engagement
of their daughter, Eleanor Marian, to Alvin Jorgensen, son of
Mrs. Clara Jorgensen, 317 Pennsylvania avenue southeast. The
wedding will take place early in May.
Bergman - Broome.
Garner, April 3 - Bennie P. Bergman and Helen Bernice Broome,
both of Britt, were married March 28 at the Methodist parsonage
in Garner. The Rev. T. Ernest Hoon performed the ceremony. The
couple was attended by Elmer C. Aldrich and Mrs. Alice M. Broome,
mother of the bride.
10 in Hancock County Chosen for CCC Camp.
Garner, April 3 - Carl O. Roe, member of the committee of three,
for re-employment in Hancock county met at Britt Monday morning
to help select 10 young men for reforestation work from 16
applicants. The ones who were to report to Mason City tuesday
include Verne Peterson and Claytus Hanson of Garner; Eldridge
Dunfee, Vern Lepper, Lester Matille of Corwith; Elmer Swaney and
Clifford Friedow of Britt; Walter Drake of Klemme; Vincent
LaPlante of Crystal Lake and Robert German of Woden.
Rites for Mrs. Perry C. Loomis of Belmond Held
Belmond, April 3 - Mrs. Charlie Webb of Pyullap, Wash.; Mrs. M.H.
Lord, Mrs. Lewis Lord, Mrs. Dedrich and son of Minneapolis,
Minn.; Mr. and Mrs. Howard Forristal and Miss Inez Kent of Des
Moines and Mr. and Mrs. Charles Pablett of Iowa Falls, attended
the funeral of Mrs. Perry C. Loomis held in the Loomis home
Sunday afternoon with burial in the Belmond cemetery, the REv.
S.U. Leinbach officiating. Mrs. Loomis died suddenly at her home
Thursday afternoon from heart disease.
Mitchell County Pioneer Dies in Kansas
McIntire, April 3 - Anthony Tibbits died Sunday morning at his
home in Salina, Kans. He was 80 years old March 25. He was an
early settler in Mitchell county, Iowa, moving to Kansas from
Osage. He was a brother of John Tibbits, 78, McIntire who is now
the only surviving member of the family, of one sister and five
brothers, Mr. Tibbits leaves an aged wife and one son, George,
also in Kansas.
G.A.R. To Seek Aid for Grattan
Des Moines, April 3 - Representatives of the G.A.R. departments
in a meeting here next week will seek executive clemency for
Marvin T. Grattan, 85 year old veteran, it was learned. Grattan
now is serving a life imprisonment sentence in Fort Madison
penitentiary for the murder of Claude Meade, race horse driver.
The slaying, which occurred at the Decorah fairgrounds, was an
outgrowth of an argument over a horse race. Grand Army officials
said heads of their own organization, the Ladies of the G.A.R.,
Soms and Daughters of Veterans, and the Sons of Veterans
auxilliary will attend a meeting here April 11 and probably will
confer with the governor. Petitions urging that Grattin be
paroled and transferred to the Soldiers home have been circulated
among G.A.R. organizations over the state and it is planned to
present these to the governor for consideration. Grattan was
sentenced at Decorah last fall. He claimed at the trial that the
shooting was in self defense and to protect his grandson, Henry
Grattan.
Mrs. Herington Dies in Texas
Mrs. Charles Herington, 2074 Carolina avenue northeast died
Monday at San Antonio, Tex., where she had been visiting her
daughter, Mrs. Z.D. Perry. She recently had an operation and had
been visiting in San Antonio a few months. Arrangements were made
to bring the body to Mason City, leaving Tuesday night and
arriing here probably Thursday. Funeral services have not been
made. Surviving are her husband, a barber on South Federal
avenue, and three daughters, Mrs. Willis Nichols of Mason City,
Mrs. Gladys Barnett of Houston, Tex. and Mrs. Perry of San
Antonio.
Frank Nugent Dies in Hospital
Frank Nugent, 53, who resided at 717 Carolina avenue southeast,
died at a local hospital about 1:30 o'clock Tuesday afternoon
following an illness of five weeks. He underwent a major
operation Monday upon an abscess of the lung.
Mr. Nugent, who was born at New Hampton, Oct. 26, 1880, had been
a resident of Mason City for the past 24 years. He had been a
cement contractor since 1914. Surviving Mr. Nugent are his wife
and daughter, Louise, and three brothers, Dau, Mason City, John,
St. Cloud, Minn., and William, Decatur, Ill., and three sisters,
Mrs. Pete Schmidt, Millbank, S. Dak., Mrs. M. Mills, Waterloo,
Mrs. Kate Winters and Mrs. Margaret Clair, Mason City. Funeral
arrangements had not been completed late Tuesday afternoon. The
body was taken to the Meyer funeral home.
Rites for Estrem Will Be Conducted Wednesday.
Decorah, April 3 - John Estrem, 73, who died of heart disease at
his farm home in Frankville township Saturday night, will be
buried Wednesday after rites from the North Washington Prairie
church, with the Rev. O. Glesne of Decorah officiating. Burial
will be made in the North Washington Prairie cemetery. Mr. Estrem
leaves his widow and several children.
Mrs. H.A. Searle of Council Bluffs Dies.
Topeka, Kans., April 3 - Mrs. H.A. Searle, Council Bluffs, Iowa,
died here last night at the home of her son, Don Searle, formerly
of Council Bluffs, and manager of WIBW radio station in Topeka.
Rites for VanSchoyck Held at New Hampton.
New Hampton, April 3 - Funeral services were held Tuesday
afternoon for James Milton VanSchoyek, who died Sunday afternoon
at the home of his daughter, Mrs. J.L. Gustafson. Rites were at
the Congregational church with the Rev. W.D. Spiker, pastor,
officiating. Mr. VanShoyck was born in Franklin county, Ohio, Feb
15, 1846. Four years ago Mr. VanShoyck moved from Waterloo. One
daughter, Mrs. J.L. Gustafson, New Hampton, four sons, L.S.
VanShoyck, Elmhurst, Ill.; R.W. VanShoyck, Waterloo; L.H.
VanShoyck, Sioux Falls, S. Dak. and one sister, Mrs. Ben Higden,
Britt, survive.
Mrs. Walsh, Formerly of Lonerock, Dies at Fonda
Lonerock, April 3 - Word was received here Sunday of the death of
Mrs. Richard Walsh of Fonda. Death was caused from heart disease.
The Walshes recently moved from here.
Andrew O. Gjellefald
FOREST CITY, April 3.Andrew O. Gjellefald, businessman here
for about 25 years, died suddenly Monday noon at a hotel in St.
Paul while eating lunch. He was a victim of heart disease while
on a buying trip to St. Paul. Mr. Gjellefald was owner of
Gjellefald's women's ready-to-wear store here. He was prominent
in civic activities and was about 70 years of age. The body of
Mr. Gjellefald was being brought to Forest City. Funeral
arrangements have not been announced, however.
Mr. Gjellefald was born in Norway. His wife preceded him in death
five years ago. Surviving are his son, Olaf, of Forest City and
three daughters, Mrs. Lloyd B. Tait. 340 Pennsylvania avenue
southeast, Mason City. Mrs. Clyde G. Stoner. 311 Third street
northwest. Mason City, and Miss Helen Gjellefald of Forest City.
