Local Youth at Naval Academy
Miss Mildred Leven, instructor in local high school, was a visitor Wednesday at the June week activities of the United States Naval Academy at Annapolis, Md., the guest of Midshipman Emerson E. Fawkes. Mr. Fawkes, son of Mr. and Mrs. George R. Fawkes, 22 South Indiana Ave., ranks third in his class of 535 with a total multiple of 90.63 out of a possible 100 for the academic year. The outfit of midshipmen will call Saturday on a European cruse on the battleships Arkansas, Utah and Florida. Mr. Fawkes has been assigned to the Utah. A week will be spent in each port at Barcelona, Spain; Naples, Italy; and Weymouth, England.

Gullard - Groth Marriage
Miss Alice Lenora Gullard of Bricelyn and Oscar Homer Groth of Mason City were married at the Trinity Lutheran parsonage Thursday evening. The Rev. O.L.N. Wigdahl officiated. Witnesses were Mr. and Mrs. E.A. Crapser. Mr. and Mrs. Groth will reside at 208 Seventh st. northeast. He is employed at the Chapman Furniture company and Mrs. Groth used to live here several years ago.

Mary Barton to Finish at Carleton College
Mrs. Louise Barton leaves Saturday for Northfield, Minn., to be present at the commenceement exercises of Carleton college. Her daughter, Miss Mary Barton, will receive her B.A. degree. During Miss Barton's four years at Carleton she has been prominent in college life. Her major is public speaking. It was for work in this line that she was, in her junior year, elected to Delta Sigma Rho, national Forensic society. In her senior years, she was one of six elected to the Scribes, honorary society at Carleton, for girls having produced work in English, showing marked literary ability. Miss Barton will be engaged in research work this summer for a professor of English.

George J. Tiss, Pharmacist, Dies
George J. Tiss, 56, veteran pharmacist and long time resident of Mason City, died suddenly Friday noon at his home, 729 North Federal avenue. Death was due to heart disease. Surviving with Mrs. Tiss are three sons, Lynn, residing in Chicago; Evan, residing on the west coast, and Wayne, living in Des Moines. The body was taken to the McAuley funeral home.

Early Resident Dies
Hans Christiansen, 77, whose home was at 708 South President avenue, died early Friday morning of heart disease at the farm home of Ben Rasumussen, four miles northwest of Alexander. The body was returned to the city and taken to the Randall funeral home.

Mr. Christiansen had been a resident of this city since 1882. He was born Dec. 30, 1851 in Denmark. After coming to this country he was married Dec. 2, 1882 to Miss Lena Thogerson in Mason City, who with two daughters, Mrs. G.G. Belshelm of this city, and Mrs. Josie Nelson of Chicago, survives.

Funeral services will be held Monday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock at the Trinity Lutheran church with the Rev. O.L.N. Wigdahl, pastor, in charge. Burial will be in Elmwood cemetery.

Clear Lake Locals
-Mrs. Dorothy Borg and Mrs. Reva Freeman returned to their homes in Chicago Thursday evening following a visit with their mother, Mrs. R.S. Young, North Second st.

-Mrs. Ronald Williams, Lake Forest, Ill., has arrived for a visit at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Warren Herriman, South Third st.

-Maurice Cruise and Mrs. Hazel McDermott and son, Randall, of Atlantic, have taken up duties at the Wayside Inn for the summer season.

-Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Haydon and sons have moved to their cottage, Kings X, on the north shore for the summer season.

Mrs. L. Lowe Dies Suddenly
Clear Lake, June 7 - Mrs. Lillian Jackson Lowe, mother of Mrs. Jack Donald, West North street, died suddenly late Thursday afternoon from an attack of heart disease. Mrs. Lowe, whose home was at Cedar Rapids, arrived Monday for a visit with her daughter. She had been ailing in health for the past six weeks.

Mrs. Lowe was born April 4, 1872, at Osborn, Kans. Three children and her husband are left to mourn her sudden death. The body was taken to Ward's Funeral parlors. Funeral services will be held at Cedar Rapids where the body will be taken overland Friday.

Butler county Licenses
Allison, June 7 - Marriage licenses issued during the month of May were to George Henry Hopkes, Waterloo and Allene Irene Downing, Waterloo; John Alvin Davis, Shell Rock and Nellie Agnes Roberts, Waverly; Robert Bruce Hickle, Shell Rock, and Mary Eliza Gibson, Shell Rock; Marion Earl Welch, Grand Junction and Fanchon Bernice Buss, Parkersburg; Howard Glass, Beaman and Alice Mary Jackson, Liscomb.

Quarrel Cause of Two Deaths
Davenport, June 7 - Loyal R. Fisher, 38, Davenport police officer, shot his wife, Mrs. Anna Fisher, and his sister-in-law, Mrs. Claude Wilson of Salt Lake City, and then shot himself thru the head, dying instantly. Mrs. Wilson died shortly after being taken to a hospita. Mrs. Fisher is in a critical condition today from bullet wounds in her head and right shoulder. Attending physicians state that recovery is doubtful.

Coroner J.D. Cantwell announced today that the shooting was the result of jealousy over what Fisher considered to be unfaithfulness on the part of his wife, and the belief that his sister-in-law was influencing Mrs. Fisher to turn against him and defraud Fisher out of his claims to property left by the will of Henry C. Nielson, Fisher's father-in-law.

Services Are Held for World War Veteran
Eagle Grove, June 7 - Funeral services for William Hanson, a veteran of the World war, were held at the Kubitscheck and Kastler funeral parlors. The services were in charge of the Rev. W.G. Muhleman of the Methodist church, and burial was made in Rose Hill cemetery.

Mr. Hanson was born in Irwin and grew to young manhood there. He joined the United States army in 1912, and served one year in the Philippine islands, and also served in Hawaii. He was in many batles of the World war and did not receive a wound. He was given an honorable discharge but re-enlisted several times and on his discharge from the World war under the head of "Remarks" the comment was made "Service honest and faithful.

He leaves the widow, two children, his father and mother, three brothers and two sisters. The local American Legion post was guard of honor at the burial ceremony.

Ruthven Man Drowns in Lake
Ruthven, June 7 - About 25 men this morning were still seeking the body of Hans Ming, 27, Ruthven farmer, who was drowned off Babcock's Point, in Lost Island lake, north of here, about midnight. Ming was standing up in the boat fishing, far out from shore, when he fell out of the boat, according to the story told by a small boy who was with him on the trip. The boy reported that he saw the body of Ming in the water once, then rowed rapidly to shore for help.

When rescuers started for the place where Ming's body was last seen the boy was unable to remember, sice it was dark, even the approximate place where Ming went down. This fact made the work of recovering the body the more difficult. This morning the search was still going on. Because of the depth of the water, in the vicinity of 16 feet, a call was sent to Estherville for more equipment. Ming leaves a wife and four children.

8 Year Old Hampton Child Dies Suddenly
Hampton, June 7 - Glen Brunning, 8 year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Brunning, died at the Lutheran hospital only a few hours after he had been taken there for treatment.

Lawler Man Will Visit Europe After 40 Years
Lawler, June 7 - Mr. and Mrs. A.J. Blazek left Wednesday for Europe. They will visit Mr. Blazek's brother, who lives in Czechoslovakia and whom he has not seen since he moved to this country 40 years ago.

Services for Mrs. M. Dunn at Clarion
Clarion, June 7 - Funeral services for Mrs. Matthew Dunn, 58, were held Wednesday morning at St. John's church, the Rev. Father Dunn, a relative of Dubuque, saying the mass, and the Rev. Father Murphy of Dubuque and the Rev. Father Terpey of Clarion assisting with the rites.

Mrs. Dunn was born in Ireland in 1870 and was married to Matthew Dunn at Dubuque on Sept. 24, 1881. Mr. Dunn died 10 years ag. Mrs. Dunn is survived by two daughters, Helen of Clarion and Lillian of St. Louis, and three sons, Leo of Eagle Grove, Harry of Clarion and Will of Minneapolis. After the funeral services, a cortege drove to Anamosa where burial was made.

Funeral Services for Mrs. Brennan at Eagle Grove
Eagle Grove, June 7 - Funeral services for Mrs. Patrick Brennan, 94, were held at the Baptist church in charge of the Rev. E.A. Anderson, pastor.

Bridget Downey was born in Ireland, coming to this country at the age of 16. She lived first at Scranton, Penn. She was married to Mr. Brennan in 1857, and moved with him to Wright county, Iowa, in that year. Eleven children were born, three only surviving. Mr. Brennan died two years ago.

The surviving children are Mrs. E.P. Riley and John Brennan in Eagle Grove, and Mrs. Mary Wilson in Chicago. Burial was made in Rose Hill cemetery.
